Kevin Smith to direct "Reaper" Pilot

According to Variety, Kevin Smith has signed on to direct an upcoming pilot for The CW titled, Reaper.

The show will follow a 21-year-old who finds out his parents sold his soul to the Devil and now must work as a bounty hunter retrieving souls for the Prince of Darkness.

Smith classifies the pilot as a comedy along the lines of Shaun of the Dead. He talked about why he was doing it, saying, "Why am I doing it? a) The script is funny, and b) I've always been curious about trying my hand at directing something I didn't write."

KJ's Take: Very interesting news. I've never seen a single CW show, but this might make me start. I do love Shaun of the Dead ...

Sounds like it could be good. I miss occult based shows with a sense of humor. Guess that's the Joss Whedon fan in me talking. Does anybody remember that short-lived show on Fox in the late 90's called "Brimstone"? Sounds like this show is similar but with a comedic side to it. I'll give it a whirl.

Always interested in what KS does, at least behind the camera (Catch & Release??), and the premise sounds ok. KJ, you have never watched Supernatural? Everybody Hates Chris? Girlfriends? Ok, kidding about Girlfriends, but they actually have a few decent shows that other networks regret having passed on and probably would be doing well ratings wise if they were on other nets.

Here I thought Verbal Kent was played by Kevin Spacey, not David Spade...LOL. You make in interesting point, but I wouldn't really consider becoming a grim reaper after death as being quite the same as your parents selling your soul and consequently you become a BOUNTY HUNTER for hell. I stand by what I said...this sounds a lot more like that "Brimstone" show that used to be on Fox.

CW has several good shows, IMO, and if you consider its the merger of the WB and UPN, it probably has had the most shows I've watched over the last several years.
Gilmore Girls, Supernatural, Smallville, Buffy, Angel . . . some of the better television IMO.
Smith directing this Reaper will be interesting, perhaps, but I don't know that I'm gonna check it out.

Wow, this is the best original idea that has been offered to Smith? It sounds like a dozen other shows and Ghost Rider is currently presenting the premise on the big screen. He chickened out of Green Hornet, but is willing to take on this series, which already has "cancelled" all over it? I have to say, I really liked some of Smith's first efforts, but his directing and writing never "grew up".

I have seen a few episodes of Gilmore Girls, I blame my GF.

I never really got into Smallville or Angel, I only watched bits and pieces of Buffy.

I think this is kinda cool that he is doin somehting different these days. its always good to try something new. as for it being on CW....sell out! j/k

I blame my wife for Gilmore Girls, too.
But for most of its run it has some of the smartest dialogue I've seen in a tv show.

Understand, however, that I have an aversion to the typical "cop", "lawyer", "doctor" and "family sitcom" style show.

I've liked most of Kevin Smith's work. But, I lost a lot of respect for him when he bailed on Green Hornet. From the interviews I read, it seemed as though he was afraid of failure. All this after he said he would do it. I don't respect artists who back down from projects that require them to stretch a little. He had the potential to make the best superhero movie to date. But he wussied out. After he gave his word. I agree that his work hasn't grown up. The whole Green Hornet thing is an example of why.

Also, why does everything fantasy have to have a tongue in cheek quality to it these days? The show could be interesting if it was played straight.
