Defiance the First 14 Minutes

Check out the show and game!

We have been keeping our eye here on SyFy Channel’s Defiance. Is it possible to tie in both a TV Series and a Video Game simultaneously? The great experiment begins in April and Mania will be covering it. Check out the first 14 minutes of the pilot below.

The Pot: In the year 2046, it’s a new Earth – with new rules. Over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As they settle into town – overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jaime Murray) - events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for.

Defiance, from the minds behind Battlestar Galactica and Caprica, debuts on Syfy on April 15 at 9/8c.

 Okay, that looks pretty badass.

I would not boost like a flop show like Craprica however.  I plan on watching either way don't need to watch the preview.  Looks like they are putting all their sci fi (sy fy?) eggs in one basket on this one getting rid of Santury and Eureka.  I hope they make it for true sci fi sake or it's more cheap reality crap.

No I wouldn't be listing Craptica in the show's resume either. I didn't really care for BSG it was just ok. But I won't hold those two shows against them and will give this show a chance. If they pull this off it could be as big as TWD.

I was never able to get into BSG...that is, I never caught it from the beginning, and everybody said I couldn't just jump in.  I plan to watch it if it's on Netflix when we finally get it.  I didn't think Caprica was as bad as you guys seem to, but I know it was far from a favorite.  I really miss Eureka also, but really, Warehouse 13 fills the Syfy comedic niche pretty well.  I think they need something more action and drama oriented, and this show looks like it's going to deliver pretty well.

I'll be watching this....at least at first. I can add 1 more to the 3 shows I follow that are currently running

BSG was pretty awesome so that alone gives me hope. Never got around to Caprica so can't judge

I'm sorry, but BSG being just "ok" ... I could not possibly disagree with you more.  It was an unprecedented Science Fiction show, that may see no equal (short of Babylon 5).  And the best part about it was not even the "Sci-Fi", though it was pretty awesome, but the "human element" .... the story itself.  If this show even approaches BSG, I would be extremely happy, but I am skeptical.  After watching the preview, the part that worries me the most, and which BSG did not have to deal with, are the special effects .... particularly in regards to the aliens and alien creatures.  If it looks too cheesy .... or too much like one of SyFy's many "B-Rated" monster flicks .... this show will go to crap.  I'm really pulling for another Battlestar Galactica experience ..... and if you haven't seen BSG, what is wrong with you???  Go get it .... now!  Please let this be something along the lines of that, and I will be happy.

It's got potential. I'm hoping the "human element" (dad and daughter chiming/harping in the car together) wasn't just reserved for the first 15 min or for the first few episodes. So many times with these shows they suck you in with some good writing and character development and then jettison it with some formulaic week to week yawnplots. I wasn't too impressed with the aliens and their Mad Max-esque garb. All their garb and chaotic dress looked new and unused, like the cast dropped by the prop and garb room on the way to the set and just tossed on some mismatched articles. Oh well.

As for the two folks naysaying on BSG... goodness. BSG, one of top 10 best tv series of all time!! How can you "meh" BSG? That's like saying I'd rather watch CSI or another episode of Law and Order over Breaking Bad, GoT, or the Walking Dead.

I didn't say I hated BSG, I just didn't think it was all that. I have friends who loved BSG, but hated Caprica.

What worries me about this show more than anything else is the idea of running a tv series and video game universe simultaneously with each one impacting the other.  It all sounds cool in theory, but I'm not a big gamer, so how will that effect those of us viewers who don't get the online gaming experience mixed in.  Will we be missing major storyline points and the like?  That just seems like a problematic way to go about a TV series.

And put me in the camp of being "meh" about BSG.  I only watched the entire run of the series after it was off the air.  My girlfriend at the time was adamant that I watch it.  She loved it!  I know, sounds like an odd role-reversal.  Anyway, I watched the whole run with her.  It was okay, but I didn't think it was the "bees-knees" or anything.  I didn't like the jump in time between 2 of the seasons where they leaped ahead several years. And the ending of the series was "bleh."  Didn't care for it.  Still, the impact of that series was good for tv sci-fi and it was a good show.  Just didn't think it was the end all be all of Sci-Fi.  And Crapica was just that...crap.

One of the big turn offs of BSG for me was the pseudo religious mumbo jumbo. The other was that they had FTL drives but didn't have energy based weapons. That just bugged me.
