Mania Box Office Report: The Croods Wins. Yes, The Croods

Olympus the true winner

By Robert T. Trate     March 24, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

It definitely had a better cast than Escape from Planet Earth, but I’m sure no one at Dreamworks thought that The Croods would win the weekend. However, if you look at the numbers, Olympus Has Fallen is the true winner of the weekend. It grossed nearly half its budget already, where as The Croods still has a long way to go for even those numbers.

Box Office Mojo had this to report: “In second place, Olympus Has Fallen exceeded even the most generous expectations with an impressive $30.5 million debut. That's the top action movie opening so far in 2013 ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard ($24.8 million); it's also more than the combined debuts of Parker, The Last Stand, Dead Man Down and Bullet to the Head. Finally, Olympus Has Fallen is now director Antoine Fuqua's highest opener ahead of Training Day ($22.6 million), a past hit that was a major selling point in the marketing”. Ray Subers

This week... well let’s hope a 3D upgrade and some re-shoots are worth the wait. Will it be Yo Joe or oh no?

Dang, I didn't know the Croods had a budget of 135 Mil. I wonder what the actors got paid.

I saw Springbreakers. I just have to say fellas. DO NOT take your kids or teens or first date or anyone you might feel uncomfortable with watching sexual situations with, to this movie. In fact I don't even know why I saw this movie! Such a weird experience.

Took the kids to The Croods and they liked it.  I'm just counting down the days to IM3.  It can't get here fast enough.

Well I took myself to see The Croods and I loved it too. The scene where Grug tries to imitate Guy and sounds off a bunch of silly ideas made cry with laughter. See not everything Ryan Reynolds touches turns to shit :)

Spring Breakers I agree with alienstatue was a weird flick. It's told in such a spaced out way, maybe it's supposed to sort of represent the state of being high which a lot of them are throughout the film. All in all I have to admit to have dug it if for nothing else at least for being different. Lots of boobie shots

Olympus Has Fallen was also pretty good. Butler has redeemed himself a bit for all those awful romcoms he'd been doing. Bunch of ass kicking action and mayhem and I found the plot although familiar still managed to have a bit of freshness to it.

The Call was ok, not great and probably something I wouldn't recommend to most folk. It did have its moments during the kidnapping with the girl in the trunk. I just didn't like the way Berry's character gets involved in the end.

Oh yeah it's GI Joe time, GI Joe time, GI Joe time

Not going to lie either, more than likely I'll be seeing The Host as well. Looks much better than anything I saw from Twilight

Went to see "Olympus Has Fallen", I really liked it.  The action was very good and the pacing was great, didn't spend a lot of time on the backstory, which was good.  I agree with Wiseguy 100%, Butler has redeemed himself.

Thank you, Wise, for making my day.

Did anyone see "Jack?" What a $ failure... Was it that bad? Or was it just not the right time?

Thanks to Wiseguy, I am now picturing a Na'vi in a banana suit dancing like a fool.  Possibly even doing his own Harlem Shake video to boot.

Wise only caught 4 movies this weekend?  Must be a result of sequestration...

momitchell7 3/25/2013 10:11:59 AM

Kinet... Yes, Jack the Giant Slayer was a very good movie IMO! I went in with low expectations - basically seeing it with the family because there were no other kid friendly movies out that we hadn't seen. We all had a great time and I was confounded as to why there had been such a negative buzz around it.

I'd absolutley recommend seeing it - great fun, great characters and the comedic timing in many of the scenes was perfect too.

alienstatue 3/25/2013 11:56:29 AM

Wise - I will say that the begining of Sprintbreakers, had me saying "Now this is my kind of movie!!", but after that, like you said, it turned into a Spaced Out flick. Franco was pretty funny in it.

I'm going to see Olympus Has Fallen sometime this week. I'm glad it's getting some decent reviews. I thought it would just be garbage type action.
