Kiefer Sutherland talks "24" film

Kiefer Sutherland talked to Crave Online about the big screen version of 24 that is currently in development.

Below are some selected tid-bits, you can read the full interview which deals more with the show here.

"It’s something that we really, really want to make. The real key difference would be that the 24 hour film would be a 2 hour representation of a 24 hour day. It would be the first thing that we didn’t do in real time. Mainly, you have to understand, we’re making two episodes every three weeks. We would have three months to make a two hour [movie]. Just to have that kind of time to really allow our cinematographer and our director and the writers to focus on such a finite thing. And actually be able to do a film that really has a conclusion, I think would be really exciting not only for us to make but I think for an audience as well. But the thing that I’m most excited about that is that we’re going to make it within the context of still running the show. Everybody compares it to X-Files the movie, except with X-files the movie, the show was done or at least he was done with it at that point. I actually believe that the film and the show can actually coexist and for quite some time. I think once that starts to happen, the dynamic between television and film will really change in a major way."

Sutherland also added that "it will be outside of the TV show" timeframe.

KJ's Take:  I never got into the TV show despite the fact that I like everything I have seen.  It's one of those shows I keep saying I am going to catch up on, but never do.  I don't think I would be interested in a film based on it unless I manage to catch up on the TV show.

24 is the only reason to watch TV anymore. That and house.
24 helped to re-energize a fading field of wasted television.

Oh, and before you become the man in charge and get to comment on things Mr. KJ. Then maybe you should know what your talking about in the first place. All I have witnessed from your "takes" is the fact that alot of the things that are/was Cinescape/Mania is all about, you haven't seen or heard of.

I'm with KJ on this. I know 24 is supposed to be a good show. I know I should probably watch it. I've just never gotten around to it. Nothing against the show at all. It's all me. I guess I feel like I would be irrevocably locked into watching 24 episodes in their entirety that pushes me off. Then again I watch Lost , Heroes, Galactica which are all shows that make you watch every episode, so I'm not too logical on this. Still, if I saw a great trailer for the movie, I might go see it.

I just got in to 24 this past season and it immediately became one of my must see shows. Lost could take a lesson from 24. Start later and run straight through. No interruptions or repeats!!

Lost can learn a lot from everyone.

And I can't get into the hsow either, it is just so god damn over the top and there are parts were they just talk and talk about the terrorists. Plus how many terror attacks can take place?

Being over the top is kind of the point! It's supposed to be charged with energy. It also helps give a framework for the quieter 1-1 relationships between the characters, which is a big part of the show.

How many terror attacks could take place? Well, an infinite number, actually. But this is *fiction* so let's limit it to, say, 10 seasons max.

I started watching 24 in its 4th season, and I never looked back. In fact, I watched the first season the same time I watched season 4 as it was airing. You'd think that would get confusing, but it really didn't. Since then, I watched everything but season 3 so far. I might start that while season 6 airs. We'll see. My reason for posting this? If you haven't started watching this show, but it intrigues you AT ALL, then start watching it immediately. It's my favorite show on TV. I would recommend you start from the beginning, because in later seasons, there are some major events that happen to characters introduced in the first couple seasons. There are things you'd find out that you wished you didn't know. Watch 24 now!

I've seen the first season of 24 and while I liked parts of it, parts of it didn't make any sense to me (SPOILER: a lot of the stuff about Nina). The show does have some of the most intense moments I've seen on TV, though.

I haven't watched any of the other seasons yet, but I've heard so many good things about season 5 and this season sounds promising, too. Do I need to watch the other seasons to jump aboard at this point?

Scoundrel,

Yes, I'd say you really need to catch up first. Lots of backstory heading into this new season.

Scoundrel,

There is still more back story to help with Nina in the later seasons, so once you start on those, will hopefully elevate your understanding.

Like most people...I used to watch TV for the X Files up until season 3, at which point it began to suck...but 24 has brought me back, along with Heroes. The problem with this is now they're going to put Heroes up against 24 which is going to be interesting...I think we were all watching Heroes while waiting for Jack to come back.

I'm probably going to have to tape them both and then watch them both on a day when TV sucks...which is basically Tuesday through the rest of the week.
