I've always loved King Kong and I love all 3 versions of the film. I'd rather have a live action film. I mean it seems like these motion capture films aren't any cheaper anyway.
Bottom line, I'd definitely check this out though

It seems a King Kong prequel is on the theatrical horizon, with Spirit Pictures picking up the rights to Kong: King of Skull Island, a prequel to the well-known tale of the big ape. Once upon a time on mysterious island far away, this project was being developed by special effects legend Ray Harryhausen.
The rights to make the movie were brokered with the Merian C. Cooper family, who own the iconic Kong property. Cooper co-directed the original classic released in 1933. And they seem to know the pressure is on to live up to Coop's legacy.
"We're very concerned with honoring Merian C. Cooper's legacy in Hollywood. We want to make sure that whatever we deliver will honor his memory," said Spirit's Steve Iles, who worked on videogames for the "Star Wars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises through his Pocket Studios game company.
The plan is to produce the film using motion-capture technology such as Robert Zemeckis used to make The Polar Express, Beowulf and the upcoming A Christmas Carol. Spirit's own facility would produce the CG work.
Plot Concept: Written by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland near the same time Peter Jackson was producing his remake, the book focuses on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films.

I agree with wiseguy... 'm not sure if this would be huge at the box office, but I would be there.
There's not enough giant monster films these days, I'm all for this! Bring on the big apes!
An entire movie dedicated to Skull Island? It would be fantastic. The best part of Jackson's remake was the middle hour on the island so this has real potential if handled correctly.
Boring ! Nothing to see here !
The King Kong "1976" with Jeff Bridges was far better.
Another movie that will get $zero$ from me =)
If it was live action and the effects were done by Weta I'd be excited but for a motion capture film, I'm not.
These motion capture films cost a lot of money and seem to be a waste. They sure do not draw in the audiences any more and as realistic as the animation is, I must say that a movie like Beowulf would have been far more exciting and fun to watch in live action. I would love to see this live action, but if it is the animated Zemeckis obssessed version then I'll prob just do like Hanso and queue it on my Netflix.
And I'm sorry but the rubber suit King Kong of the late 70's sucked. Only one giant snake to be found and having him on top of the world trade center towers instead of the empire state building was crap
The "success" of the 2005 film was more or less attributed to Jackson's LOTR cred. I think this generation of audience has had their fill of Kong, maybe in another 20 years or so. That seems to be the cycle for the big ape.
Hollywood isn't out of new ideas, they are out of people capable of creating them.
