According to ComingSoon, Kirsten Dunst let it slip in a news conference that she felt the Spider-Man franchise needed to take a break.

"Well, I think [director] Sam [Raimi] has dedicated so much of his life, like more than 10 years, to the Spider-Man franchise with so much passion and love, the man is burnt out at this time," said Dunst.   "I think he needs a long vacation to put his creativity towards something else, and then maybe we'll revisit it."

When someone mentioned that Sony had already ordered a fourth script and would likely go ahead with the film with or without Raimi, Dunst replied, "Do they want to give Sam Raimi a heart attack? That's evil. Sorry, that's not happening any time soon. I would just say no for Sam's sake so that he can have a break. We would all do it together, because Sam, Tobey [Maguire] and I are a team now, but there's no way it's going to happen very soon. I just can't imagine that. We don't have the story to tell right now."

There is a bit more which you can find over here.

KJ's Take:  Now class, gather around.  Today's lesson is how to effectively grab a studio by the balls ... that's it, now give it a good twist!

too much money are involved...They(the studio) don t give a shit about actor or director health condition...if the succes is there they have to moove to the sequel before the public forget...that s what happens with harry potter...if you wait too long you take a risk...i think it will be without sam raimi....

Kirsten Dunst says "Spider-Man" needs a break

Narpin says Kirsten Dunst needs a smack across the face.

Eff you, Dunst. I want Spidey 4 with or without Raimi at the helm. I'll miss MaGuire and Raimi, but you sucked and I'll be glad to see MJ recast.

This whole interview reminds me of this comic strip:

Oh, and what the eff is that crap about "ten years"??? Spidey 1 - 2002. Spidey 3 - 2007. That's 6 years you dumb 2 bit lousy actress. Just go away and make Dick 2 or something and leave us alone.

Yeah , ya know the only thing I had a problem with in Spidey was Dunst.... don't get me wrong, they made it work, but for fans of the comic, did anyone picture Dunst in the role... it didn't feel like MJ, and it's not just the look, Mary Jane had a confidence and spunk that Dunst did not pull off, she comes off as whiney and bland. Kill her off!

Directing can be as depressing as it is a passion. Raimi probably does need a break. Not neccessarily a long break. I need about 3-6 months to relax after assembling a short film in order to recharge. I wouldn't think it's all that different for directors of feature films.

(And Narpin, are you factoring in pre-production in your assessment of years? As much as Spiderman 1 came out in 2002, there was a series of legalities and such pre-dating the film that had to be sorted out. She's likely factoring that all in. Raimi has likely told her how many years he's spent trying to build this franchise and she's relating it to us).

At first, I didn`t like Dunst being cast as MJ and I still don`t think that she is right but, they do pull it off well. I don`t think it would make sense to have a different director for Spidey 4. Its like having Jackson not do the Hobbit or Singer not doing X3. We all know how that worked out.
I also don`t know if Dunst can really speak for Raimi. And from what I hear Tobey and he , pretty much hate each other. To her, this is just another acting gig, and its not that big of a deal. Not a lot of heart is put in it for her.

Hey ponyboy76 X3 was pretty good, and Singer trashed Superman. So, what's your point again?

Bmfstunner • Mar 16, 2007, 07:31am •
Although, she is speaking for sam and she really shouldn't because we don't know how he feels about it, I will say I agree with her. The Spider Man franchise has been like every two years, maybe it's time they took a break and come back to it in like four years. Let's face it to, if they keep forcing scripts and keeping pushing spider man, the product might come out watered down. I love spider man and I'm sure I'll be happy with the third one. I do appreciate though that kirsten has stuck up for sam, showing a lot of unity amongst the three actors, and she said she would do another and it seems like tobey would too, I really appreciate the comitment they have to the project. I just say if its a break that all three REALLY want then let them have it, I ain't going anywhere anytime soon, I can wait.

Snaggletooth should STFU. Better yet - decline the role and check for the next movie and let another actress take the role. She's annoying as hell.
Pony - directors and the movies I agree with - but I don't think actors ALWAYS make a difference - when they replaced Batman with the various changes I don't think it made that much of a difference - it was the change in directors that sunk the ship. Nipples on the batsuit - great!
X3 sucked.

X3 wasn't bad, but none of them were ever good either. Singer did a decent job with the franchise, but I' am not going to rave about him, I did like how he did some of the characters, but for the most part and even in the first one, there was just too many characters to follow. The story got diluted sometimes and it seemed like I had to follow too much in a two hour movie. I would have much prefered it just have been jean gray, wolverine, cyclops, and storm in the first one, then in the second one introduce rogue and ice man, I didn't need to see them in all three.

She's right! Give it a break. Let's say... about one year? Is that enough? Oh yeah! I want Spidey 4 in 2008!!! ;-)
Let's face it. Three to four years is too long a time between the movies. Two years should be doable. With or without Raimi, Dunst or Maguire.

And X3 was one of the best superheroes movies of all time. Ok... except that day/night scene at Rykers Island. But that even happened to John Ford in "The Searchers"!
