Best of Kitty contains three very distinct pieces of hentai anime. Something for everyone as the saying goes. Barring the playback difficulties, this is actually quite the nice disc and looked good on our Apex player and home office theater setup. I would imagine it would look even better on our main home theater setup however.
All three OVA's are presented in Japanese and English languages. The stereo soundtracks sounded pretty good as dialogue was clean and undistorted.
The video playback was also quite good. We saw only a few hints of artifacting and pixellation on our uncalibrated system used to review it. Colors seemed dead on and not over saturated. Black levels look reasonably well, though it was there that we saw the most break up throughout the episodes.
The packaging must have definitely been a challenge. How do you promote three completely distinct shows on one cover? Answer: with very small images. The back cover gives a few more pictures from each of the shows as well as a decent description of each of them. The disc itself is silk-screened with the mascot for Best of Kitty. Similar to other Media Blasters releases to date, there is no insert.
The menus are pretty well laid out with bits of images from all the series as well. Selecting the show and starting points is easy and language selections are the same for all of them so you don't have to select it when you go from one show to the next.
Being a fan of hentai, I was looking forward to this disc. Beyond the disappointment of it not working in three out of four of my players, it was a pretty good selection of shows. Orchid Emblem definitely ended up being my favorite with the other two tying for second place. The animation for all the shows varies as they were done by different teams.
Orchid Emblem does the DEA agent turned fighter storyline and has probably some of the more explicit scenes out of all three shows. There's also a secondary character in there who I swear looks like a slightly old Lain. That was only too weird to see. Orchid Emblem also feature what I think was the best animation of the three.
Advancer Tina is the science fiction piece of the three. Tina, serving a 2000 year jail sentence, explores mysterious planets to reduce her sentence. This is more of the horror hentai genre with plenty of blood and bodies being ripped apart by tentacles. The animation is different from the norm with less cartoony character designs. The storyline is serious through most of it, though you'll find plenty of places to laugh depending on your view of titles like these.
Battle Team Lakers EX is your team of mostly women and one guy who fight evil while still going to school. There's plenty of schoolgirl outfits, compromising situations and some fun SF moments. The explicit sequences aren't as rough as Orchid Emblem nor are they anywhere near as violent as Advancer Tina. This title really sits in the middle of the three in terms of content direction.
If you're a hentai fan, there's bound to be something to like in this collection. Providing it works on your player at least. If it wasn't for that, this would be an easy recommendation.
