Who knew that Chouun was so particular about her food? Well, you snooze (or go for a bathroom break) and you lose.

What They Say

Kan'u is walking in the mountains when she gets lost in the thick fog with Chouun. Futhermore, Kanu slips on the cliff and ends up spraining her ankle. As they are waiting for the fog to clear up, Chouhi finds a small cottage. It turns out it’s at the bottom of the mountain where there is an elementary school where Suikyo-sensei teaches. The cottage is the home of the student, Koumei.

Koumei and three other people continued the journey with Kan'u. Once, an argument suddenly arose when there was a fork in the road and everyone went down their own path. Chouhi ended up on her own when she came across a town. With low traveling expenses, she lacked the money for food. Having a plan, she began to wander about the town since she knew about a big celebration that was going to occur.

So, Chouhi and Kan'u have managed to anger Chouun, since they ate the menma (dried bamboo) that Chouun was saving for last in her ramen. Thus, she's in a rather foul mood. But before this plot thread (plot? well, I guess this passes for a plot line in this show) can advance much further, the trio are separated by a dense fog, during which Chouun disappears. Kan'u tries to find her, but winds up spraining her ankle. After the fog clears, Chouhi carries Kan'u to a nearby house where Suikyo-sensei and her student Koumei live.

While there, Kan'u takes a liking to the little kid Koumei (who looks about the same age as Chouhi). This makes Chouhi a little jealous, of course. So, when the occasion arises to show up Koumei, who has to climb high into the mountains to get a medicinal plant, Chouhi follows along, planning to take advantage of an opportunity to steal the plant and return with it first. Of course, Koumei gets into trouble, and Chouhi helps her out, as she is a good girl at heart.

And so, after Kan'u gets better, Suikyo asks Kan'u for a small favor: would she take Koumei with them on their journey, since she has expressed an interest in seeing the world. And so, we have a new member of the party, though they still have to find out where Chouun went.

In the next episode, Chouhi and Kan'u fall out over her method for choosing which fork in the road to take, and when Koumei tries to mediate, Chouhi only gets more angry, and so they go different ways. Chouhi actually picked well, as she wound up finding a city, but…she doesn't have any money, so she's in need. But, she happens to run in Bachou again, and there's a sign in town announcing a competitive eating contest. Just the thing. Of course Bachou and Chouhi reach the finals. There, they face a tiny little girl named Kyocho, but that tiny girl has a massive appetite and a bottomless stomach. Afterwards, the trio get involved with some local thugs holding a brother and sister up for a repayment of a loan. After some fighting, and the intervention of Butterfly Mask (Chouun in disguise; a disguise that only works on Chouhi), the thugs are beaten off, and all seems to be well.

And finally, Chouhi is reunited with Kan'u, who was convinced by Koumei to go back and try to find her. So, our little party is almost reunited again.

In Summary:

In general, the comedy seems to work best for this show. The animation is variable at best (and even at its best, it's only passable), and the fighting is uninspiring to say the least. The story, such as it is, is borderline moronic. The comedy is nothing special, with a mixture of slapstick, parody, and the usual types of silly misunderstandings that are the staple of humor in many cultures, but it's probably where the show entertains the most. And the show is entertaining, though not in any deep way. Most of the entertainment, of course, comes from looking at the female character designs and trying to guess when the bounces will occur. It's disposable entertainment, and thus eminently suited to being streamed for free.
