Just two months after Walt Disney Pictures tasked the Tron Legacy team-- director Joseph Kosinski and writer Travis Beacham-- to put together a remake of their 1979 film The Black Hole, director Kosinski talked to MTV Movies about what fans can expect.

"For me, it would be taking ideas and iconic elements that struck me as timeless and cool and preserving them while weaving a new story around them that's a little more '2001,'" said Kosinski. So what kind of things would he preserve?

"What sticks out most is the robot Maximilian," he added. "The blades and the vicious killing of Anthony Perkins. That freaked me out and that's definitely going to be an element that will be preserved. The design of the Cygnus ship is one of the most iconic spaceships ever put to film."

Kosinski said they'll concentrate more on the science behind black holes for this new version. "From a conceptual point of view, we know so much more about black holes now, the crazy things that go on as you approach them due to the intense gravitational pull and the effects on time and space. All that could provide us with some really cool film if we embrace it in a hard science way."

Plot Concept: The original centered on the explorer craft U.S.S. Palomino is returning to Earth after a fruitless 18-month search for extra-terrestrial life when the crew comes upon a supposedly lost ship, the magnificent U.S.S. Cygnus, hovering near a black hole. The ship is controlled by Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his monstrous robot companion, Maximillian. But the initial wonderment and awe the Palomino crew feel for the ship and its resistance to the power of the black hole turn to horror as they uncover Reinhardt's plans, which involve turning his former crew into robots and flying through the hole.

While the details of the update are being kept secret,  the remake does involve grounding the story in the science of a black hole, much more so than in the original. The 1979 film was a loose retelling of Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"!

Sounds good to me...I remember I had Black Hole bedset when I was a kid.  I loved that flick but I totally forget what it's like now.  I'm always down for reboots of sci fi and fantasy movies but underneath me I'm sure we'll find a bunch of haters.

I listen to the soundtrack many times a year.  I hope they consider the score!  I would not mind this being a sequel actually, exploring inside the black hole (insert jokes here).

"20,000 Leagues" set in space it was.

A newer version would be nice. The original had a lot of potential, but came off looking silly and strange.

I'm on board for this one....I can't think of a better story that NEEDS to be updated.....

Just as long as they don't have the annoying little robot. Maximillian can stay.

Correct, Muenster. It was literally 20,00 Leagues in Outer Space. Disney took their best known SF movie and placed it in space. Which is fine if that's what you want to do. They wanted to get in on the Star Wars B.O.money they thought they should have been making as quickly as possible. It's very kid-oriented in looking back on it, but again they wanted the same audience Lucas tapped into.

Let's see what they do for a re-boot.

Jawbreak, I had that bed set too! It's cool about the re-make... but it all depends on Tron.

Well, both Tron and The Black Hole were actually considered flops of their time (Especially The Black Hole) but Tron has always had more of a cult following.  I really don't know if The Black Hole can garnish as much anticipation and fanbase.  It do remember it being very dark for a Disney movie though and I loved that scene where they had to cross that bridge before the giant ball of fire crushed them.  I will definitely check it out.

This is an excellent movie to update. I am super happy that they are actually centering the story on the real science of black holes and what can happen should anyone get near, at least in theory. I get a feeling kind of like Sunshine for this one. Emphasizing the science in the science fiction.
