There are lots of quotes from Kurt Russell floating around the internet in regards to his thoughts on the upcoming remake of Escape From New York.  The remake is set to star Gerard Butler in the role of Snake Plissken, a role originated by Russell.

From Entertainment Weekly:

"I will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial reaction was, 'Oh, man!' [winces] I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is, American."

"People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken. I created him!"

Asked if he'd do a cameo: "F--k that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond."

Then later, from Sci Fi Wire:

"Oh, I don't know, I was just kidding around," Russell said later.

"Listen, I've had a long career, I'm only happy to have had it. Good luck to everybody, and, yeah, see if you can keep up, cool."

KJ's Take:  Oh brother.  I'm sick of all this 'Escape' talk.  So it's a remake, get over it, Hollywood remakes everything now a days.  Don't like it?  Don't see it.

As for Kurt, Butler is a great actor, I think the way he talked about him is a disrespectful rant from a washed up fading star.

Washed up fading star!?!? Kurt did CREATE Snake. What is your prob KJ? I know you are selfish, but dang man. Show some respect. Remakes do not show ORIGINALITY! And yes. Originality is still out there, bud. All ya have to do is think. What Kurt said is completely warranted. Man, KJ, you seem to have no idea about movies sometimes. One day you make snes. Two months you don't make sense. Pick one. Of course this is coming from the guy who thought The new Halloween Picture of Michael Myers was fresh and new, and it gives him chills. Even thought the picture looks like EVERY other Halloween Michael Myers!!!!

You tell 'em Kurt!!!! The Remake is WRONG! And Snake is AMERICAN! I had a hard enough time with Bales as Batman. I mean what if they had Paul Walker as James Bond? Chris Evans as Bond or George Clooney?

KJ, what you said is disrespectful.

Whoops, sounds like #1 doesn't know his Bond trivia. The original character was named JIMMY BOND and played by an AMERICAN in a one hour TV movie - years before the movies. The British actor was his sidekick and played the part of an MI5 operative.

"In 1954, CBS paid Ian Fleming for the rights to adapt Casino Royale into a one hour television adventure as part of their Climax! series. However, Barry Nelson played a CIA agent named Jimmy Bond, and Clarence Lieter was a British agent."

" So it's a remake, get over it, Hollywood remakes everything now a days"

(rolls eyes) Yeah, like THAT'S a good excuse.

Eff this crappy reamke. Not interested. Not interested in Zombie's Halloween crapfest reamke, not interested in the Hellraiser remake. Eff them all.

I disagree, all I said was two things:

1) If you don't like the fact that it's a remake, don't see it. Thus you're not giving it money, if most people don't want to see it, the film won't make money. Ta Da.

2) Kurt needs to watch what he says. Sure, he created Snake, sure he made the character what you all know and love, but why does that give him the right to bash on another man trying to make his way in Hollywood? Wincing when he found out who would play the role and crap like that is just childish and someone as established as Kurt should know better.

And he is washed up: Sky High? Poseidon? Dreamer?

I guess Grindhouse is a cool role, but other than that, what the heck has Kurt been up to except bashing on other stars?

Not to mention the guy has NEVER been a big box office draw, hell even both the Escape films are considered failures. Escape from LA made a paltry $25 million on a budget of over $50 not including advertising.

He has some good roles like Backdraft, Stargate and my personal favorite, Tombstone, but the majority of his career is filled with crap. Who is he to start talking smack on other actors? He did play Captain Ron right ...

Oh Dear Lord Comment #4(ala KJ).

You live in the here and NOW.

I'll say in the same style I said it in the Kurt Russell Star Spotlight from last week....or you know what, I'll say it in what works these days.

You are owed one large ass whooping for your opinions above, KJ . lol

You should be held responsible for such fanboy comments.

See my Kurt Russell Star Spotlight Column for Mania. There's an effing reason why Kurt Russell should also be known as "The Man".

Oh....Btw....KR could kick Gerard Butlers ass six ways from Sunday.

Haha, its nice to see the fellas at Mania, arguing!
Anyway, Kurt Russel did create Snake Plissken, but he is still acting like a 5 year old. He is a veteran actor and should act accordingly. He isn`t some timeless star that is still blowing up the box office.
KJ, you forgot Tango & Cash. That was an awesome flick.
I can understand that Rusell may be upset at someone playing his role, but he`s an ass for the way he`s going about it.
Butler is a great actor and its not his fault that they are remaking the movie. He`s just the talent.
And for the record King Leonidas would beat the living crap out of Captain Ron.
KR will do a great job as Stuntman Mike and I`m looking forward to Grindhouse, but he needs to know his role. Step aside for newer talent and not be a crotchety old bastard about it.

Jarrod,

You know I like you, and I consider you a friend, but I totally fail to see why you blindly (and badly) defend the hack that is Kurt Russell.

In your aforementioned Star Spotlight column, you kindly mention that Kurt has never translated his mass amount of 'cult films' into any box office success whatsoever. But let's be fair here, he hasn't just failed to translate his films into success, no, he has become one of the biggest black holes in box office history!

The man has never, and will never be able to carry a film on his own. The guy is a proverbial black hole for a studio's money.

Poseidon was his latest embarrassment, with a $200 million estimated budget and a whopping $60 million US gross. Good going Kurt. The movie was terrible to boot. The only enjoyable part was when the idiot swam to his death.

The guy's biggest success was probably Sky High. SKY HIGH!!! I am supposed to idolize the man who brought Seve Stronghold into my living room? Fat chance.

As I said before, the mans saving grace is Tombstone, which is an amazing film, and some of his smaller films like Backdraft and Stargate, both of which I really enjoyed.

But come the hell on, did you see the travasty that was Overboard?!

As for the drop kicking comment ... Kurt 'Humpty Dumpty' Russell couldn't drop kick a maniquin, let alone Gerard Butler. Did you even see 300 or did you decide to stay in and dust off the DVD of the garbage Kurt Russell film, Soldier. Butler is a bad ass. Butler would toss a spear from 800 yards while chomping on an apple and banging his gorgeous queen all at the same time.

Butler's work in 300 is better than just about anything Kurt can claim. Period. Now take the overrated hack that is Kurt Russell outa here and leave me alone!

DarkJedi • Mar 26, 2007, 04:36am •
It sounds like the success of 300 is clouding your judgement on Gerard Butler being a better character of Snake Plissken then Kurt Russell(that's how his name is spelled).

That's alright though.

You're free to agree with the "What have you done for me lately" crowd....instead of giving respect where respect is due.

Btw, KR (much like John Carpenter) was involved with Box Office Failure after Box Office Failure.

Does that mean we should allow cult classics such as Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Mouth of Madness, or Escape From New York to be remade?!?!

Does it take away from a classic to not be a box office success or make money like 300?

If so, we will be going back in time making remakes of effing 90's popular icon characters. Is that right?

• Mar 26, 2007, 04:40am •
Hell yes we should let Escape from New York be remade, and we should be damn happy about it!

We have a high quality lead, and greatly improved effects. The film can be the visual orgasm that the original only could dream of being.

Fight scenes, explosions, I can't frigging wait, it should be one hell of an action film ...

And I'm not in the 'What have you done for me lately' crowd, Kurt has NEVER done anything for me. He's always been a box office disaster and always will be.

You know, I have to say I've hated the whole "KJ's Take" since the beging but I also thought that the overwhelming hatred that the majority of people had for you was unwaranted.

However as time went by it became clear (especially after that blog you posted) you deserve all the contempt that people have for you. You're a shit stirer, you seem to post the most outrageous banter you can think of for the sole purpose of riling up a bunch of fanboys.

You come off as arrogant, unintelligent and most of all immature. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, even morons (and by the way, what are you, like 16 years old?), but why you need to try to make your thoughts a part of the news article is beyond me. I mean non of the other writers seem to feel the need to let everyone know what is on their mind, and if they do, they post it at the bottom of the page like every one else, but I guess your above that.

I'm sorry to be another one of those people posting about their dissident for KJ but its late, I'm tired and I can just see him rubbing his evil little cheetos stained hands together in anticipation of the shit storm he hopes to create with his latest "Take".
