I find  that to be a very astheticly appealing explanation.  I don't believe a word of it, but it's poetic.

You explored  the idea that Nessie and Bigfoot and the like might be ghosts of extinct creatures in an earlier column.  Phantimals you called them, which is a great word.

Legends like Nessie take on a life of their own.  Sightings of ambiguous or natural phenomenon are intrepreted as being supernatural.  Maybe somebody saw a large eel and somebody else saw a huge sturgeon and somebody else saw a shadow of a strange piece of driftwood.  Another guy played a practical joke on his buddy.  Pretty soon it's all stitched together into one legend of a supernatural beastie which haunts the loch.  And since tourism is good for the economy the legend is encouraged.  Why not?  It doesn't hurt anybody.
