Lair of the Beasts: Keep Out!
By Nick Redfern
December 03, 2011
Area 51, Hangar 18, Montauk, and the Dulce Base: these are just a handful of the many and varied select, highly-classified installations about which the governments of the United States, Australia, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and elsewhere prefer we, the general public, remain steadfastly ignorant. And those same governments have extremely good reasons for wishing us to remain in the dark.
It is at these very same secret facilities that, for decades, clandestine research is said to have been undertaken into lethal viruses, genetic manipulation, crashed UFOs and deceased alien entities, biological-warfare, mind-control experimentation, futuristic aircraft and spacecraft, teleportation, weather-modification, invisibility, time-travel, and much, much more of a conspiratorial and cosmic nature.
Whether situated deep under the oceans, far below the ground, or within the heart of hidden, remote desert locales, these and many other super-secret places are guarded with a paranoid zeal by those in power who wish to keep their secrets buried and locked far away from prying-eyes.
Sometimes, however, the huge, steel, near-impenetrable vault-like doors that help to hide the shocking truths open wide – or are forced open - and the shocking secrets within are revealed.
And, it’s these very issues that are the focus of my new book – Keep Out! – published by New Page Books.
One of the strangest things that I uncovered during the course of the research for the book was the sheer number of stories linking cryptozoological creatures with secret installations. Sounds bizarre? It is!
Puerto Rico, or to give it its correct title, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is what is known as an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the Caribbean Sea. And according to some, it may very well be the one place – possibly more than any other on the planet - that is home to not just one secret base, but to an overwhelming plethora of classified locations, certainly of a governmental nature, and maybe even of an alien nature, too.
Over the course of the last twenty-years or so, the people of Puerto Rico have been swamped by a multitude of UFO encounters, sightings of strange and unearthly-looking craft surfacing from both mountainous, cavernous lairs and undersea installations, and run-ins with strange, vampire-style creatures that one might accurately describe as the distinctly evil-twin to Steven Spielberg’s benign E.T. Its name is the Chupacabra.
On one of my several expeditions to Puerto Rico, a number of residents suggested it would be a very good idea for me to focus my attention upon the links between the beast and a former U.S. Naval base called Roosevelt Roads, located in the town of Ceiba, but which is today the José Aponte de la Torre Airport.
As far back as 1944, when the base was inaugurated, it was rightly perceived as being a place of prime, strategic importance – and particularly so if the island became the site of hostilities with unfriendly nations. And by 1957, Roosevelt Roads had been officially designated as a Naval-Station.
To demonstrate its importance from a military perspective, the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (USNAVSO), had its base of operations at Roosevelt Roads. In January 2004, however, the Navy elected to relocate USNAVSO to Naval Station Mayport, Florida. When the Navy finally moved out of the base – specifically, on March 31, 2004 – it was seen as a victory for those on the island seeking independence. But: what about the link between Roosevelt Roads and the Chupacabra?
According to the stories, which were coming from all across Puerto Rico, a number of captured, and very vicious, Chupacabra had supposedly been briefly held within a secure, secret facility at Roosevelt Roads at some point in the early-1990s, before being secretly shipped to the States – probably to Area 51, or to some similar desert locale. And that, in various incarnations and to varying degrees, this was the story told to me by numerous individuals on the island only makes it even more intriguing.
Moving on to another infamous beast…
The idea that one of the world's most famous monsters - Bigfoot - might be tied to the domain of secret bases and deep and dark conspiracy sounds absurd. Isn’t such a scenario just too outlandish to warrant even a solitary comment? Not everyone thinks so. One of those who offered commentary on such matters was the late Gabe Valdez, a former New Mexico State Police officer who spent a great deal of time digging into rumors that there existed deep below the New Mexican town of Dulce, a huge, alien-controlled installation.
As far as Bigfoot is concerned, Valdez uncovered information that led him to believe many New Mexico-based Bigfoot sightings were actually the work of a covert arm of the U.S. Government possessing the ability to create hologram-style imagery of the hairy man-beasts. The purpose: to scare and deter people from getting too close to some of its secret underground installations.
To hear such a theory coming out of the mouth of a respected police-officer, who had been consulted by none other than the FBI on matters of a cattle-mutilation nature at Dulce in the mid-to-late 1970s, is as deeply fascinating as it is truly unusual, and probably overwhelmingly unique.
And that is just the tip of a huge iceberg linking strange creatures with secret bases…
