Laura Dern Returns for JURASSIC 4

We haven't talked some Jurassic Park for quite sometime now but the long news void on it looks to be over. Franchise star Laura Dern has indicated in a new TV Guide report that her character is set to play an important part in fourth installment of the dino series. This would be the opposite of other star Sam Neill, who has indicated in the past that he may not be making an appearance this time around.

Here's what she had to say.

"It's a while away but my understanding is it's happening and my character is very involved," she told the magazine. "I know [director] Steven Spielberg is looking forward to [getting it together] over the next year."

The first three films were released in 1993, 1997 and 2001. Spielberg directed the original two films while executive producing the third while Joe Johnston took the reigns. The first film grossed 914.6 mil worldwide (domestic: 357 mil, foreign: 557 mil) while the second film would go onto gross 618.6 mil (domestic: 229 mil, foreign: 389 mil).

After JP3, you'd think Spielberg would say "no more sequels."

4 would have to be very, very good. As in "better than the original," and I don't see that happening here. Crichton himself would have to write the script to get a good story out of this dead dino.

It's like they are focusing on each character from the first movie in each sequel. You really can't go wrong with dino's at the movies however crappy they are.

I wish they would stop making sequels and go back and revamp the series, following the first two novels more closely. I loved JP when it first came out up until I read the novel by Micheal Chrichton. It was way different and way better! It pretty much blew the movie out of the water. And don't even get me started on how awesome the novel for The Lost World was and how really crappy the movie was. In my opinion, had Spielberg stuck with the books as source material for both films, they would have been a lot better. JP3 was quite honestly made up from much of the scenes in the original JP novel that were not in the first film.

They would be wise if they revamped the series and go back to the novels as source material. For those who would comment and say, "why do a remake?" Trust me. If you've read the books, you would know that they wouldn't be remakes at all.

Agree that they have gotten progressively worse but I still get a kick out of watching dinosaurs running around, especially if the cgi is as good as the JP films. I'm down for more but do hope for a better story, maybe they should follow renderman's suggestion, it's never a bad idea to go back to the source material.

Agreed agreed. I read the first book 10 times and enjoyed the first movie, though definitely think they could have done a little better. I won't even discuss how they desicrated the second book-to-movie, which was especially surprising because I was under the impression that Chrichton was "highly motivated" by Universal to pump out a second book for them to adapt into another hit movie. Instead, they decided to pick and choose elements from the book and the spend half an hour on a horrible Godzilla-like ending. The whole movie trilogy was basically two books spread out over 3 movies, with the last two done very haphazardly, though I will say I enjoyed JP3 more then the JP2.

As for JP4, of course I'm in. It's freakin' dinosaurs!!

OK, this MUST be a joke... what now? are the dino's going to rebel?

The first movie was so beautiful ("nature finds its way...), the revelation that these dinosaurs are animals, not good or bad... Then there was a second island, which... humm ok, it can happen... then a third movie for a rescue in the island where the evil dinos live and two exes rekindle love...

Yes I agree, the book and the original movie were great, but with the direction that the series has taken, I have to wonder Why a fourth?

Oh! Yes... I forgot... $$$

This smacks of cash-grab to me. Which is odd, because Spielberg doesn't seem to need the cash. I would agree that, if they're going to go back to the JP well, they might as well go for a more-faithful-to-the-book remake at this point. Where could they take the story for a 4th movie?

Ya know this is one film series that started with an incredible original but got progressively campier as it progressed - but for some reason I really dig them all and I look forward to a fourth. Usually obviously inferior sequels get my panties in a bunch but not with these. Don’t know if it’s just the “Gee Whiz It’s Dinosaurs” factor or what but I really enjoy the ride with all three. I like that Dern will be involved and I’d be totally psyched for Sam Neil’s return if that ends up being in the cards. It’d be awesome if they found a DNA sample from Wayne Knight and cloned a T-Rex size version of his character.

So Spielberg is back on for this project? The last I heard Jonathan Sayles was set to write and direct the fourth JP, which would have been very cool considering his work is almost all made outside of the mainstream Hollywood circuit. I guess he's out.

Jurassic Park 3 was god awful, Spielberg should've had his left nut cut off for producing that garbage.

REBOOT!!!!

I know I say that a lot, but this franchise is overdo for a redo. The original film was good for what it was, but it never even came close to meeting the standard of the novel. The novel was terrifying, and the film while a good adaptation was far too family friendly. That and Sam Neil bears no resemblance to the Alan Grant character.
