Gods of Egypt Casting

Rush and Butler Join the Cast

When a filmmaker like Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City) is attached to a project, Mania immediately pays attention. Poyas' next project is titled Gods of Egypt. The film’s “story is set in motion when one ruling god, Set, kills another, Osiris. When Osiris' son Horus fails in his attempt to get revenge, and has his eyed plucked out, it's up to a young human thief in love with a slave to help defeat the mad god” (THR).

Well that sounds interesting enough. Now throw into the mix the fine talents of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Geoffrey Rush, and Gerard Butler as the Gods. The last two actors have just signed on for the film.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will play Horus (Sky God)

Geoffrey Rush will play Ra (father of Set and Sun God)

Gerard Butler will play Set (God of Darkness)

If Poyas' story follows the ancient Egyptian legends and myths there still remains the casting of Osiris and Isis, to name just two more and the young human thief.

You had me at Alex Proyas. I'm still lamenting that he is no longer making Paradise Lost.

This sounds like it can be pretty awesome too though

fatpantz 9/25/2013 8:32:45 AM

Jake Gyllenhaal for the thief!!  LOL

nemesis1_57 9/25/2013 9:13:22 AM

So even Egyptian Gods spoke with British accents awesome

CaptAmerica04 9/25/2013 12:53:31 PM

This sounds like it would be awful... until you use the name "Proyas," and then all I can think is, "this will be awesome!"

Except, NO, fatpantz.  Just... NO!!  LOL.  (They'll probably try to cast Chris Pine, unless they want to stick with the accent thing all around, and then they'll get one of the Hemsworths.)

Nemesis, LOL and they aren't even of Egyptian decent either.

Actually, with Proyas involved it does get me excited to see how this develops. Will this be a sci-fi type thing ala Stargate and Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light? Or is it straight up fantasy similar to LOTR and Clash of the Titans?

Stay tuned.

So all the Egyptian gods (and presumably the Egyption people, too) are all pasty white folk? Maybe @fatpantz is right, and Gyllenhaal will be the thief... The slave he is in love with will probably be played by Cate Blanchette or someone like that.

BunyonSnipe 9/25/2013 5:32:44 PM

Much like the Asgardians, they are gods, it's the people that worship them who were Egyptian, not them...

About 6 months before the original Stargate movie came out Previews had some Stargate designs in there and I thought is was going to be like Clash of the Titans, but set in Egypt, the the gods being these powerful aliens...

I would still like to see a Sci-Fi version of Greek Myths, with Herakles and Co. being hybrid alien experiments and the 'gods' watching them from their vast spaceship atop Mount Olympus...

I'm down with this

vagabondster 9/26/2013 7:38:04 PM

hmmm..would have been more interesting to have both hemsworth brothers as set and osirus (inagine the thunder god being evil...) but yeah, not much has really beem done by hollywood about egyptian mythology (mummy series doesnt count)
