Lawrence Explains I AM LEGEND Reshoots

Nearly a month ago, we passed along word that I AM LEGEND was still being filmed/reshot by director Francis Lawrence. Well, Ryan Rotten at Shock Til You Drop asked the director the question that many news outlets were wondering when this hit the wires and for his part, he answered the question even if he wouldn't go into detail what finale scenes were reshot...

"I'm a huge fan of pick-ups and re-shoots," he tells us. "There's this misconception that it's always a bad thing and for me it's like saying a painter only has one shot at a brush stroke. That you can't erase and do it again." Due to this production's tremendous CGI grocery list of scenes in various stages of evolution (an estimated 800 shots, he says), "we weren't seeing fully-rendered shots until about a month ago. The movie starts to take on a whole other life. It's not only until later that you can judge a movie as a whole and go, 'Huh, maybe we should shoot this little piece in the middle, or tweak this a little bit.' It just so happened that our re-shoots revolved around the end of the movie."

I AM LEGEND hits IMAX and standard theaters December 14, 2007.

sounds like a perfectionist to me! well lets hope it pays off on screen where it matters...

If it is in fact FX shots, than this is not surprising... until you see a final shot it would be hard to edit properly, and even then, it ay not turn out the way you expected. I have faith, i like what I've seen so far.

Movie looks good, I like Will Smith plus Dark Knight stuff attached to I AM Legend, oh yea, I'm there opening weekend!

You say perfectionist, I say hack. This guy is just one of the many that think the sh*t they pass off as music videos means they can handle features. If this guy is a perfectionist then explain all the faults in Constantine…
But yeah I will go see this cause of TDK preview and this is one of my favorite books so I need to see what they botch up.

I don't know why people get so bent out of shape about pick-ups and re-shoots. Every time a director does them, rumors go around about how the movie sucks, then someone has to explain exactly what Lawrence just explained, then by the time the movie comes out, it either succeeds or fails on its own merits. It has nothing to do with the re-shoots. I thoroughly enjoyed Constantine, and everything I've seen on Legend so far looks fantastic. I'll be there.

Agreed fft. And most complaints about Constantine seem to be about about Keanu, blond hair and accents, not directing, so that does not concern me. Plus, I have free passes for next Monday so I'm not worried about it in the least. :) If only it were IMAX... :(

It's not getting bent out of shape, it's just that a lot of times when you're making changes this late in the game it's usually a bad sign. Either you got a bad reaction from a focus group or the director finds the movie doesn't mesh well and you're trying to save it. I'll take him at his word, but I'm just pointing out what seems to have been the case in the past. I want this to be good and believe it will be.

Like he's going to say, "We screwed up."

Anyone who doesn't understad why a creator would want to go back and re-do something if they had time, has obviously never created ANYTHING. This goes for writing, drawing, painting any artist knows,
A piece is never truly finished, and there is ALWAYS something a creator wants to keep working on.
Quit passing judgment on shit you have no idea about.
what a bunch of losers (those of you bashing him for re-shooting something)

I hate it when new movies are coming out and then B-Movies try to copy, theres this
B-movie that just came out called I AM OMEGA- Cheap rip off taking two movie title names, and then when Transformers came out, another crappy rip off called TRANSMORPHERS came out, whoever it is really needs to stop making these movie knock-offs..
