IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that I AM LEGEND opened strongly, with most shows sold out at IMAX® theatres during its debut weekend, contributing $3.2 million of the record-breaking $77.4 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, from December 14 through Sunday, December 16. The picture opened on 77 domestic IMAX screens, posting a per screen average of $41,936. I AM LEGEND also opened on 6 international IMAX screens, bringing the worldwide IMAX estimated total to $3.4 million.

"With 'I Am Legend,' this weekend marks the biggest December opening in not only motion picture history but IMAX history as well. We couldn't be more thrilled," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. "We're delighted to be able to offer fans of Will Smith and this classic sci-fi thriller two exciting ways to experience the film throughout the
holiday season."

"'I Am Legend' marks our biggest December opening, and Warner Bros. Pictures has again delivered a powerful blockbuster that resonates with IMAX audiences," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "This has been a banner film year for IMAX, one in which we've contributed to the box office results of a large number of movies that have opened in the prized number one spot, and we're pleased that the recently confirmed expansion of the IMAX theatre network will help us meet the high demand from moviegoers."

"We're so excited by our strong film performance in 2007. Combining a highly successful, time-tested science-fiction story with the talents of Will Smith, Warner Bros. Pictures and the power of The IMAX Experience® is why these results are so fantastic. We are delighted to be a part of such a successful movie that we believe will carry on in full force through the holidays," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "These weekend results illustrate the strength of IMAX's partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, and the potential draw of films that are ideally suited to IMAX."

Uh, no.

Saying that you're showing the first 6 minutes of the Dark Knight with every IMAX showing is the reason this sold out. Because frankly, I wouldn't have even paid matinée prices in a bargain theater for another Will Smith P.O.S. movie like 'I Am Legend'.

I predict a fairly huge dropoff this weekend for this movie.

Uh. . .hate to disappoint you, but, if the crowded theatre I was in this afternoon is
any indication, "I Am Legend" won't be dropping off any time soon.

after Pursuit of Happyness, I really dont care what the nay-sayers say about Will Smith... seeing how, if the movie he's in bombs... its most likely NOT his fault... the fault would rest squarely on the shoulders of the DIRECTOR of the movie (who more than likely would blame Smith for a box office bomb.)
there are far worse actors in hollywood... here let ME help: CHRIS TUCKER.
why hate on Smith? shit he's actually NOT making P.O.S. movies Daffy... when did Independance Day and Pursuit of Happyness become POS movies?
Unfortunatly, while I enjoyd the flick, I saw an 11:15am showing this morning an the theater was empty as New York in the movie. Thats not a good sign unless the kids were in school,... which they probably were... I talked to a VTA driver who was sitting in the flick... he said all his friends were working and he was working a split shift today nd was going back at 7pm.
Maybe the director went a little overboard on the CGI... or maybe not. I personally didnt care... I liked it. It had a more upbeat ending than the LASt movie I saw... The Mist depressed the crap outta me, at least this one has sorta a "pass the baton" ending instead of a depressingly-lame-as-fuck ending.
and filmnot... almost ALL movies have a 50% dropoff for their second weekend, it actually is not a good indicator of a bad movie. The indicator is bad PR and bad word-of-mouth... Personally, I dont think I Am Legend will fall into that trap.

Will Smith has never disappointed me. I saw this for the second time tonight and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time just 3 days ago. Plus, the previews give you a great idea that it is obviously post-apololyptic and a LOT of people enjoy watching that kind of thing the same way a lot of people are infatuated with some really bad car accident they just drove by and slowed down to rubber-neck at. Even if it does have a drop-off in the coming weeks, I bet it'll level off and remain steady during it's theatrical run.

Hey, just got back from seeing this bad boy in IMAX..... I loved it. the thing is I didn't love it for the reasons I thought I would. I love the whole apocalyptic genre especially with undead or mutants involved, but what hooked me was Smith. Now I have always liked Smith, but unlike some never loved him in anything... that is until now. What a performance... I was floored. The action sequences were awesome as well. The only thing I didn't like was the CGI... It was good don't get me wrong but in my opinion it would have been creepier and more believable if they had used real actors in makeup to portray the infected, and then filled in the CGI for scenes that required it, like in Blade 2 (those Vamp hybrids were damn scary). All in all I enjoyed it, and you can't beat IMAX...
As for the Dark Knight prologue... what can I say, it owned.

You guys love to hate Will Smith. My man, is a good actor and not only that, brings in the b.o. Not alot of actors can be successful in different genres, from comedy to sci-fi to drama. "Haters keep hating"

Agreed, ponyboy. It's interesting that all these haters keep posting about how much they hate Smith, but his movies keep opening at #1. If he's so terrible and his movies are such crap, how did it wind up making $77M?

Sorry but this movie really sucked!!! No one looke forward to this movie more than I. Why did the people have superhuman strength? climb walls? practically fly through the air with the greatest of ease? I mean come on.. after all they are only human people. I felt that shold have benn explained. The movie was like 90 minutes. They could have added another 60 at least to explain the background a little more. i mean who reallys cares about his wife and kid? AND WHY please tell me why was there a leader of these night seekers??? where did he come from??? And dont get me started about the ending... There should have been at least 2 exits in that house in case somthing just like that happened... dont u agree?

Hate gettin sucked into this stuff but i'll give it a go... (***Some spoilers below)
The virus turned people in to Vampire creatures, no longer humans, and appeared to give them strength, agility, and a thirst for blood.... most of us watching the movie got that, why did it have to be explained any further?
I would say thye length of the movie was intentional, because 2/3rds Smith was alone, and to keep the pace brisk they didn't get bogged down in background.
The flashbacks to his wife and son were designed to let us in on who Neville was and how much he has lost, as well as why he is content to stay on the island (no one to look for), and why Sam was so important to him, and IMHO worked well.
Uh... who cares where the leader came from, he was some kind of Alpha male, did you need to see a vignette about his early years after infection and rise to become mutant/vampire president.
Lastly, why would he have two exits in his basement... they did not go there because there was no other way out, they went there because they were trying to take cover. This is where he worked every day in broad daylight, the chances of getting trapped down there during the day were slim (but if he did, he had his lovely little hidey hole, he spent his nights in the bathtub upstairs, where I'm sure he was aware of possible exits.
Uh the word nitpicking comes to mind... If you didn't like the story cool, i did, but don't try to shoot holes in it, because it was very well done, even if it wasn't your cup of tea.
