I fondly remember the Thanksgiving break when OCARINA OF TIME was released for the N64. I had made a scouting trip to the local 24-hour Wal-Mart SuperCenter in hopes that they would begin selling the game at midnight, and to my delight the stores was. Around 11:30 I headed out, and found myself waiting in a line, at midnight, in Wal-Mart, for a new videogame. Who would have ever thought? Now Nintendo has re-released the classic game along with the MASTER QUEST that was never released in the United States.
The only way to pick up this new compilation for your GameCube is to go out and pre-order THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: THE WIND WAKER during Nintendo's official pre-order campaign. Most places require a ten-dollar deposit towards the purchase of the game, and you get two games for free.
It's hard to re-review OCARINA OF TIME, the game is still quite possibly the finest videogame ever made. From a gameplay standpoint, it's still a fantastically wonderful game. The graphics and sound are behind current standards, but this is still one of the best games you will ever play, and for a free price tag you can't go wrong.
But many of you won't even play the OCARINA OF TIME part of this disc. You're here for MASTER QUEST. The MASTER QUEST is the same game as OCARINA, with the exception that the dungeons have all been changed up quite a bit. You'll recognize the main rooms (the architecture itself hasn't changed) but some of the other rooms will have you completely twisted and turned around. The puzzles are much more difficult, and you'll be dealing with more enemies than before.
Ultimately it's a much more difficult game. The main world is all the same as before, but the dungeons will keep you guessing and playing. Fans of OCARINA will love diving back into one of the best games ever, only with new dungeons. It's hard to say which is better, but if you love a challenge, MASTER QUEST will satisfy your craving.
From a technical standpoint, the games have suffered. It's amazing to me how good these games looked when the first came out, yet now they just look very, very dated. Fortunately for you with nicer set-ups out there, the game now supports Progressive Scan. This will make it look a little bit better. The music is also behind the times. I would have loved to see a new remix of music especially if the original overworld theme could have been incorporated.
That said, this is still a wonderful addition to any GameCube owner's library. Having OCARINA OF TIME is always a benefit, but MASTER QUEST is really what makes this collection worth having. Sure there might not be much replay, but the free price-tag is really what seals the deal here.
If you own a GameCube, you will have to own WIND WAKER, it only makes sense to pre-order it and get this fantastic package with it. Definitely a must-own.
