Marcus Fenix and his Delta Squad would be pleased with the latest news. Since New Line was folded into Warner Bros., Gears of War has been dwelling somewhat in the murky underworld of development hell. Variety is now reporting that Legendary Pictures will be co-financing and co-producing the project for Warner Bros. and their director Len Wiseman. Scribe Chris Morgan is writing the latest script, after Stuart Beattie wrote a previous treatment last year before the strike.

"Gears" lead designer Cliff Bleszinski is executive producing and consulting for developer Epic, which owns the rights.

Plot Concept: The story centers on the soldiers of Delta Squad as they fight to save the human inhabitants of the planet Sera from a relentless subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde.

A sequel is due out on the Xbox 360 later this year.

I'm of the mind that video game movies don't work because people would rather be playing them. Even game cutscenes have minimal appeal. I don't buy games because of their story. If the story and characters were the draw, I'd avoid Metal Gear Solid for the former, and Gears of War for the latter.

Resident Evil films worked because they were zombie films, the games already mirrored a genre. There aren't many other success stories (Blame Paul W.S. Anderson and Uwe Boll, I guess).

I am sorry originaldave77 I just cant agree with you. For one I definately buy games not only for the game play but the main reason is the story line. I think video game movies can be made into a great movie only if done right. It the directors to blame not because it came from a video game and people rather play it. Resident Evil I believe was the only really success video game to movie adaption thats really manager to survive. But there are alot of mix feelings about the game. Some hate it, some loved it and some say it was OK and passable for a fun mindless movies. I for only enjoyed all the Resident Evil movies IMO. I enjoy Paul WS Anderson movies, but Uwe Boll can suck a fat steamy shit because he sucks more then a 80 year old protitute. As for Gears of Wars I hope it comes out good and they make it a R rating not no PG 13 water down movie. I love the game so I am kind of interested in this one.

Wait Flint wasnt Hanso asking for Gods of War???

Yea, it's God of War i've been calling out for. KRATOS!!! Fuck you Sony! I hate you. First my PS3 breaks down and then no GoW movie. If I didn't have a little Blu Ray library going on I wouldn't get another PS3. Hopefully I'll get one this weekend so I can finally see Batman Begins in HD.

Anyway, this could work and hopefully it does. Can we get Dwayne Johnson into this film as Santiago?

It be great if we could get a prequel but I think they'll save that for the actual game. Remember the game starts and already the world has turned to hell. With Gears of War 2 coming out maybe they'll incorporate some of that story and tell us why Fenix was branded a traitor. If I remember correctly they never mention it in the game.

If you're not interested in the story in video games, you're playing the wrong games. Sure nobody really gives a rat's ass about the story in Super Mario Galaxy, but games like Half Life 2, Bioshock, Gears of War, Halo, and God of War are all about story. If you skip the cutscenes due to a minimal attention span, I feel bad for you, and hope you don't reproduce.

As for the Resident Evil films, they weren't terrible films, just terrible adaptations of Resident Evil. Aside from a few plot points they barely resembled the games they were based loosely upon. Resident Evil 4 and the forthcoming Resident Evil 5 surpass nearly every horror film in existence in terms of quality, and fearful moments, and the films are action/horror fluff. Good eye candy, but hardly bar raisers.

Bioshock is coming, Prince of Persia is coming, Gears is on it's way. Hopefully these films will set the standard. Also Hanso, IGN announced today that (gag) Brett Ratner is on the short list to direct God of War. What the hell.

Wiseman will do Gears justice I feel, his Underworld films were a blast, and from what I heard he did right by Die Hard.

I'm of the opinion that most video game adaptations don't work because they're not properly adapted for screen. Most video games can be pretty convoluted, IMO the stories need to be simplified instead of trying to stay TOO faithful to the game, where people can and need to devote mega hours to beat.

Uwe Boll is doing GoW, coming next year in time for hanso's birthday

I will burn down Sony myself if Boll ever comes near the great Kratos.

Video game movies need to be taken seriously like comic book movies have, once that happens they'll make tons of cash.

Take a game like Legend of Zelda, that could bring in the fans plus non fans due to the fantasy elements. Done LOTR style with a good cast it'd make some money.

Hopefully Prince of Persia & Gears deliver, we need one film to open studio's eyes.

I think I'd prefer no God of War movie than one directed by Bret Ratner. Glad to see there is a short list though, it means Sony isn't so fucked up after all. Still pissed about my PS3 though.
