Lily Munster Cast

Mrs Munster is...

NBC has finally found someone to play the wife of Herman Munster in NBC’s reboot of the classic black and white comedy The Munsters.

And the lucky gal is…

Portia de Rossi!

De Rossi joins the previously cast Jerry O’Connell (The Defenders) as the matriarch and patriarch of Mockingbird Lane, the name of Bryan Fuller’s dramatic re-imagining of the old show that starred Fred Gywnne as Herman and Yvonne De Carlo as Lily. The pilot is in development for a possible midseason berth on NBC. Why the title change? Here’s what Fuller told EW: “The script is such a dramatic departure from the tone and style of the original show. If we continued to call the show The Munsters, people are just going to to think we’re doing The Munsters. We’re doing a reinvention and re-imagination of this property. I love the Universal monsters. I love The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, The Wolfman, Phantom of the Opera, The Mummy. There’s so many great characters we can run through this metaphor of family storytelling that it just felt it was ripe to do as a one-hour dramedy. Having all those elements to play with, the toy box is really, really full.”

Mockingbird Lane was originally developed for fall, but casting the show turned out to be a lot harder than Fuller and NBC had planned. The primary issue was finding the right cast. I tend to write in a very tricky tone,” Fuller told EW. “It’s hard to find actors who are agile enough to navigate the turns. There’s mouthfuls of dialog. Fortunately, we went to Eddie Izzard as Grandpa very early in the process. He’s a great piece of casting for us.”

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Dramedy?  Jerry O'Connell as Herman Munster?  Portia de Rossi as Lily?  I foresee a big budget failure coming.

I agree with phantomx69 - Brad Garrett would be the perfect Herman.  Not so sure about Heaton, though.

Ah man, best casting decisions of an old TV show since Rosie O'Donnell was cast as Betty Rubble.

The odds of me watching this show at all were slim to begin with.  With no Brad Garrett as Herman, the odds drop to zero.

Why do I see this show being cancelled mid season?  Just a gut feeling.

Is it safe? - Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man

I was getting the malware warning on this site since this weekend. Now it appears to be gone. Does anybody know the cause? Was it bogus? I'd already had expensive problems with my home computer and couldn't afford to mess up one at work so I just had to stay away 'til now.

On to the subject: I am still looking forward to this series. With producer Bryan Fuller making this I'm expecting a fairy tale-ish, romantic and tragic premise for this show similar to his Pushing Daisies series. That was good. Brad Garrett wouldn't fit that style as Herman.

Also, there have been 3 different sets of casts besides the originals in various series and TV movies from the 80s thru the 90s, so Gwynne and the rest are far from the only ones to have done the Munsters.

Portia hasn't been seen in much of anything for awhile that I know of. Her wife Ellen Degenres must have gotten pissed at her sitting around the house all day and told her to get to work.

Funny you should say Patricia Heaton, because I STILL think Neil Flynn would be a better Herman than Garrett...

If they paired Brad Garett and Patricia Heaton that would just be wrong as I was a big fan of Everybody Loves Raymond.  Can't have Robert steal his brother's wife!  :)

I'll give this a shot, but this does not sound promising.  They may have a cool idea/concept, but I just don't seeing the general public embracing it...

Yo Monkeyfoot,

I think the issue was caused by some of the advertisements (at least that is what I've gathered from other people's posts from the last few days).

The staff here usually does a great job interacting with us on the boards, so I find it really disappointing that they have not even acknowledged the situation as far as I can tell.  (Though I suspect there may have been a gag order come down from the suits, but that is just a guess).

Hey Bob Trate, just in case I'm mistaken, care to address the situation with us???  Please?!  Just wink if you can't say anything!!!  :)
