Lions Gate buys a horrific SAW

Lions Gate Films have taken some of their bucks and bought the worldwide distribution rights to the horror film SAW, with an intent to release the film sometime this year. Directed by James Wan and starring Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Potter and newcomer/screenwriter Leigh Whannell, SAW is about the search for a serial killer. Known as "Jigsaw" by the police because of the puzzle-shaped piece branded into the flesh of his victims, the movie kicks into overdrive when a doctor and another man (Elwes and Whannell) awake to find themselves chained to the wall of a room and have no idea how they got there. Realizing they are slated to be the next victims of the Jigsaw killer, the pair try to find a means of escape and to stay alive before the killer can return.

Lions Gate has been carving out a name as an up-and-coming horror friendly studio. Their acquisitions of Rob Zombie's HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, Bill Paxton's FRAILTY and Eli Roth's CABIN FEVER have brought them the attention and kudos from the genre community.
