Lionsgate Buys NA Rights to CONAN Series

Lionsgate has picked up the North American distribution rights to the new Conan The Barbarian from production companies Nu Image/Millennium Films. Variety also reports that while this film's progress stalled because of the WGA strike, Millennium Films is going to also enter into negotiations with the writers guild after interim agreements were made with UA and The Weinstein Company (see today's story) so they can get this film developed and ready for a 2009 release.

Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta, Paradox Entertainment's Fredrick Malmberg, George Furla and Henry Winterstern will be producing while Trevor Short and Dimbort executive produce. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Cowboys & Aliens, Sahara) are penning the first film in the new series, based on author Robert E. Howard's classic series.

They hope to have production rolling by the fall.

Conan The Barbarian will hit theaters sometime in 2009 (TBA).

2009 huh? Please don't rush this movie.

I really want to see this franchise reborn. The last thing we need a a cheesey made for t.v. feeling piece of mediocrety.

Haven't read the books yet, but from what I understand the original films really distorted the character. I think they should spend some time in development, too.

The original Conan the Barbarian may have swayed from the books somewhat, but it was still a great, brutal, well done movie, and one of the few times Arnie's accent didn't "sillyfy" the role! It was graphic, dirty, and even "fun" in places, and managed to be a blast to watch, especially the last battle sequence between Thulsa Doom and his cohorts against Conan and his two companions in the Viking ruins! The scene where the huge, "spring" loaded spike that impaled that bad-dude was just gut wrenching at the time. I remember the audience's reaction to that.....everyone keeled over in sympathetic pain at that moment! Ghastly!!! And Basil Poledouris' music was absolutely PERFECT for that movie!

Conan the Destroyer we could've done without. Stupid stupid sequel that was done to take advantage of the success of the first and of Arnie.

EagleManiac I agree completely. That second one was real bad and on top of that they did away with the brutality that is part of Conan's world to get a pg rating and bring in the kids.
But as far as this film goes I thought it had been in development already with the Wachowskis attached. Maybe I've been out of touch with this project too long. Anyway casting that role will be the hardest part because (as funny as it sounds) the standard Arnie set for Conan.

"Crush the enemy! See them driven before you! And hear the lamentation of the women!"
- Conan the Barbarian (in actuality attributed to Genghis Khan)
Yes, The Destroyer is definitely the weaker of the two. I think they were going for a more kid friendly version. Hopefully the new filmmakers have a passion for the material and will do it justice.

I feel sorry for Conan fans, as Nu Image/Millennium Films have a track record that rivals Uwe Boll's. They're responsible for the majority of the Sci-Fi Channel Originals, and not the good ones. (Mansquito was one of theirs.)

WAIT A F*CKING MINUTE!!!! WTF happened to Boaz Yakin's Conan? He supposedly was hot to a a ruthlessly accurate Conan movie that respected Robert E Howard's original Conan stories. WHAT HAPPENED!!!???? THIS IS BULL SH*T!

#1 - Wiggley - "I really want to see this franchise reborn."
I'd rather just see one good movie. Screw the franchise. Just make a great classic Conan movie.

Speaking of which tiredjay, earlier today, I felt a great disturbance ..., as if millions of voices cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I thought some horrible event might have been in the news, but it turned out that it was Uwe Boll's "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" opening today.

I'm all for more Conan... if it's good. But I guess that should go without saying.
