Just a few days after the animated DVD, DOCTOR STRANGE, hit the market, there are whispers inside the studios that a live action version of the film is being shopped around by Marvel Studios. Robert Sanchez at IESB has heard of the whispers and made it clear there may even be a completed script ready to go for Marvel so this film could be fast tracked to the big screen once it is picked up. While the selling numbers are not in yet for the dvd animated feature, it points to Marvel using the dvd template as a testing ground before greenlighting a big screen live action version. There are plans to go the same way with other franchises within the studio.

Under their distribution direct to dvd deal, Marvel & Lionsgate, have released ULTIMATE AVENGERS, ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2, THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN & DOCTOR STRANGE thus far.

For 2008, they have AVENGERS REBORN & HULK SMASH planned.

When Marvel confirms the live action version of DOCTOR STRANGE as well as which studio lands it, I'll pass it along..As for what the recent dvd release was about, here's the details given by the studio.

Plot Summary: Dr. Stephen Strange was one of the most gifted surgeons in medicine before his hands were left shattered and useless as a result of a car crash. Spending his fortune in pursuit of a way to fix his fractured body, the dejected doctor believed all was lost until the Ancient One offered him hope and healing in Tibet.

Training mind, body and soul with the Ancient One and his pupils, Doctor Strange’s scope, power and compassion grows as he steps closer to his mystical fate. But to fully embrace his destiny and protect the worlds of magic and reality, Strange must face betryal, death and the emergence of Dormammu.

Big thanks to Maniac scooper, "Monkeyfoot", for passing this bit of news along...

I would definitely go and see this.....Dr Strange has long been one of my favorites in the Marvel Universe....this could be pretty good, if casting is done correctly.

I wasn't a Dr. Strange fan cause I don't know much about the character. Regardless, I picked up the dvd and I gotta say the movie was pretty sweet. I don't know if they got the origin wrong or whatever but the movie was good. Anyway, a live action movie would be cool but how much would it cost? There was a lot of creatures and special effects in the cartoon. I hope the studio that green lights it actually puts the money into making a good Dr. Strange film with great FX. Looking at the pic of Strange, it reminds me of Edward Norton in the Illusionist. 2 bad he's cast in the Hulk.

It's funny you mention that...I was wondering who would be cast as Stephen, Wang and The Ancient One....too bad that Mako is not with us anymore....I think he wouldn've been cool in the role of the Ancient One...I also have the DVD and thought it great.

The following is a post that I wrote on mania.com several days ago--As well, I posted similar views that I made, over a year ago on various web sites--and judging by this story...looks like I was right, as usual. So much for being dubbed off base on my opinions by some of my fellow Maniacs here. First Johnny Quest...and now this--I'm on a roll!!!: #1 - metalwater [Aug 12 2007, 3:34 pm CDT] First...suckas!!! Now that we've gotten that out of the way...let me tell you all something...I really think all of these Marvel animated films serve as Animatics or fully animated Storyboards for Marvel projects which the company is seriously considering developing into live action movies. This is the reason why so many of these Marvel animated films come off like fully scripted movies...as they are a test, if you will, to give Marvel, and its film making partners an advanced idea of how these characters and their powers will work on screen and how best to use them in a faux 3-D environment, thanks to shading techniques and some computer 3-D effects. You can look at it this way, it helps to let them see what will work for a big screen live action adaptation, and what won't work. Fact is, it'll save them millions in development costs...and help Marvel better explain to filmmakers what they want from their characters, how they move, sound, their personal ticks, and expressions, etc., thus, showing how they should be realized, in all aspects, on the big screen, knocking out any room for confusion and mis-interpretations... (accidental or intentional) by movie execs, screen writers, film directors and producers. It's a clever short hand move... something that I always wanted to try. *********************(End Of Post) PS-Here's looking forward to seeing the Star Wars and Moonraker like climatic battle sequences in the blood stream that I suggested for the Fantastic Voyage remake!!! Biogeek...you can apologize now...or we can all wait until the Fantastic Voyage redo comes out, complete with the very climax I suggested!!!

That's strange. I wonder if this can actually make it. I'll probably give this a chance.

Iron Man looks like it will be a very good movie. it was cast well and by all accounts sounds like it was handled as well or better than Spiderman so should do well at the box office and leave the audiances wanting more. The next Hulk has a much better cast, a better story, better director. It may suffer from the Ang Lee version aversion reaction, but it may fare well based on its own merits. IF (a huge "IF" in hollywood) they give Thor and DR Strange equal attention and considered casting they will both work towards great franchises. They still can't quite get Fantastic Four right. I'm left feeling let down by both FF movies, good but not GREAT. All this can be just building the springboard for an Avenges movie. That would be an awesome undertaking of monumental proportions.

By the Eye of Agamotto I'd love a really good Dr. Strange movie. Seeing the myriad mystical dimensions he travels through realized with today's FX would be an acid trip better than 2001 or Altered States. But you would really need the right director and script (but then don't they all?). It could be done cartoony silly or too horrifying, but I really want to see this one done. All hail metalwater! He's got the system worked out.

So who do you cast? That picture looks like Robert Downey Jr, with some gray streaks, he would be great, oh wait...
