Locke & Key goes to Spielberg. PLUS: More Captain America set photos. Whedon talks Avengers sausage party. Actress tips Authority movie? More! It's your Comics2Film 10.8.24!

Whedon Talks AVENGERS Sausage Party

When Joss Whedon and the cast of Marvel Studios' The Avengers took the stage at Comic-Con it was a veritable sausage party, with Scarlett Johansson being the only player sporting the double-X.

Over the weekend, Whedon told The Sunday Herald-Sun (with comments transcribed by Moviehole) that Black Widow will, in fact, be the only super heroine on the team (dispelling recent rumors that the Wasp might be in the film). However, there will be other female players in the cast of the film.

"It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger" Whedon said. "But she will not be the only female character."

It could be that Gwyneth Paltrow or Natalie Portman will come along as hold-overs from Iron Man and Thor. Or it could be that the other female cast members will be villains. Recent rumors have pegged Alice Eve as possibly playing a bad girl role in the film with speculation being that she's Loki's ally, The Enchantress.

Whedon says that the plot of the film, "will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates."

Powell talks GOON movie

Ain't it Cool has a nice Q & A with comics creator Eric Powell regarding The Goon animated feature. Powell is writing and producing the movie along with heavyweight filmmaker David Fincher. The pic is being developed by the animators a Blur studios. They released a short demo reel in time for Comic-Con during the summer. The reel featured actor Paul Giamatti voicing the Frankie character.

Right now they're working independently of a studio, but Fincher is pitching to the majors and hopes to secure a budget of 50 to 60 million for the movie.

Click through for the complete interview, but here's a quote from Powell that we liked: "I had this huge grin that was plastered on my face when I heard Paul Giamatti says 'Knife to be eye!' So that was the moment I was geeking out a little bit. "

New Photos from RED

Comic Book Resources has a slew of new images from the October release of Red, starring Bruce Willis, Mary Louise Parker and John Malkovich.

Is There An AUTHORITY Movie in the Works?

OK, so comics creator Dean Haspiel designed the titles for an HBO series called Bored to Death. And, very recently, he won an Emmy Award for that work. He blogged about the awards ceremony where he ran into actress Stana Katic (of The Spirit and Castle fame) who dropped an interesting rumor. Writes Haspiel:

The Governor's Ball was a starry night. Hollywood throws a party. 'Nuff said. I met and spoke to the lovely Stana Katic, star of TV show, CASTLE, and told her how much I loved her in Frank Miller's SPIRIT movie [she was my favorite part of the movie]. I have a very short list of who I would cast to play my very own Jane Legit character [Billy Dogma's better half] and Stana is on that list. Stana told me she was in the midst of creating a new comic book and was in talks to act in a movie version of Warren Ellis' The Authority.

The whole thing was recounted on Warren Ellis' blog where Ellis was quick to point out that he knows nothing of such a movie. Ellis posted:

I don’t own THE AUTHORITY, and DC are certainly not compelled to tell me about anything regarding the book.

What an odd thing.

The Authority is a WildStorm property focusing on a team of super-humans who, for better or worse, have set themselves up as the wold's protectors.

Hemsworth Copied Mike Tyson Style for THOR

MTV Splash Page chatted up actor Chris Hemsworth who talked about developing a fighting and action style for Thor.

"First, we looked at the comic books and the posturing, the way [Thor] moves and fights, and a lot of his power seems to be drawn up through the ground," he told MTV News. "We talked about boxers, you know, Mike Tyson, very low to the ground and big open chest and big shoulder swings and very sort of brutal but graceful at the same time, and then as we shot stuff things became easier."

The actor also said that the costume made movement difficult.

WENN has posted a bunch of photos from the Trafalgar Square filming of Captain America: The First Avenger. The scene is filled largely by extras who are re-enacting VE Day celebrations.

LOCKE & KEY Headed for TV

New York Magazine's The Vulture column says that Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks TV have taken an interest in Joe Hill's outstanding comics series Locke & Key. He'll team with his Cowboys & Aliens and Transformers partners Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to develop the show. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) is also on board as writer and executive producer.

Published by IDW, the book focuses on a family, recovering from the tragic murder of the father and trying to resume their lives by moving into the familial New England home, a spooky old house with lots of secrets. The house contains special doors which have an effect on people should they pass through them.

Previous reports had indicated that the property was to be developed as a feature film. Kurtzman and Orci have a deal with Fox TV so that company will likely be involved with the production, which doesn't necessarily mean that it'll air on a Fox network.

C2F read and loved the first volume of the comics series and can't wait to snag a copy of the second one.

Rob M. Worley is the writer and creator of the all-new, all-cat kids comic book series Scratch9 which arrives in comic shops on September 1st! Ask your local comics shop about it today!

The "sausage party" headline had me had me cracking up.  I wouldn't be surprised if Paltrow or Portman (or Liv Tyler for that matter) have cameos but this isn't the '60's where you have only one female hero. Even the '70's teams had 2 to 3 women on the team.  I'm all for The Enchantress appearing but seriously hope she isn't the main villian. You don't need a team of heroes to defeat her...

Just reading the plot synopsis of Locke and Key, I think it would work better as a TV show anyway...

Most of the early Avenger teams only had one female.  The Wasp earlly, then followed by the Scarlet Witch.  Even the most popular lineup from the early seventies only had the Scarlet Witch.  The rest of the cast was Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, and the Vision.  It's obvious that the whole Ant-Man-Wasp thing just didn't fit into what they are trying to do and the Ultimates provides a more realistic approach to the film.  Hawkeye and Black Widow provide a far more believable pairing.  That being said, I'd love to see the Enchantress and the other Master's of Evil.

I will forever hate Kurtzman and Orci for Transformers 2.......... FOREVVVEERRRRRR!!!!!

Btw..... Hulk would probably have the biggest sausage in that party....lol

violator14 8/24/2010 9:07:00 AM

BTW.....Can anyone tell me the best way to get outta jury duty??? FFF!!!

Wiseguy 8/24/2010 9:08:16 AM

Kind of figured Wasp wasn't going to appear in Avengers, especially since Ant-Man wasn't involved. I would love to add Ms.Marvel to the mix in the future since she is probably my favorite female Avenger

Read the first trade of Locke and Key and although it was interesting it didn't really capture my attention and didn't read past that. However, tv sounds like the right fit so you can explore all the house's mysteries. A door per episode and if memory serves there's an evil spirit involved that can p;osses people, yeah tv sounds about right

Never got into The Authority or the WildStorm universe but a movie I'd see, probably, nah definitely

fft5305 8/24/2010 10:17:53 AM

Since Hawkeye is in The Avengers, they could always bring in Mockingbird.  I don't really think it will make that big of a difference. It's not like any women out there who don't want to see this movie will say, "Oh, look. One of them is a woman!" and suddenly want to see the movie.  I agree that the headline cracked me up!

jfdavis 8/24/2010 10:28:17 AM

I don't blame K and O for TF2 as that's the only bad mark I've ever seen their credit to. Alias, Fringe, Star Trek... even the Proposal, which they produced, was good...

As far as the Avengers and females, I was thinking She-Hulk (Who wouldn't be good for a first movie) or Jessica Drew (who probably wouldn't be available) and Tigra.  Not well-known names to non-fans but whatever...

With the Masters of Evil, you definitely need Baron Zemo but the rest of the line-up is fluid as their was at least three different teams some members easier to get the rights to...

Muenster 8/24/2010 10:52:49 AM

Violator, it's your civic duty, but since you insist. Drink a gallon of heavy pulp orange juice and down a handful of animal crackers and broccoli. Go to your doctor complaning of a week long bout with chronic diarrhea (Oh boy are you gonna feel bad that day). He'll prescibe some immodium and tell you take it easy for a week. Take doctors note with you to your summons. (depending on local laws, you can mail it in or even call). They are not going to put someone in the stand with bad case of the poop squirts.

OmegaDean 8/24/2010 10:58:22 AM

Can't wait for the Avengers.  I really don't mind the Black Widow being the only female on the team at this particular juncture.  I just want a solid movie.

An Authority movie would be awesome if done right. I want this movie to be as hard core as the comic was.
