Logans Run Update

BioShock Scribe for Reboot/ Remake

By Robert T. Trate     June 19, 2013
Source: Empire Online

It seems that the Carousel will burn once again, or at least it hopes to. Warner Brothers has announced that Kevin Levine (BioShock) will be adapting the original “Logan’s Run” novel for a remake/ reboot. The original novel was written by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson and later adapted into a wildly popular film in 1976 starring Michael York. Kevin Levine is best known as the co-founder of Irrational Games and a writer on the BioShock video game franchise.

If you have never seen the original Logan’s Run then you are missing out. It is by far a cult favorite in the Sci-Fi community. Though many have tried in the past for a remake or a reboot, including Bryan Singer (X-Men), the project often finds itself in development hell. We probably shouldn't get our hopes up.

Oh the heck with it... “Run Runner!”

This has always been ripe for a remake; hopefully they'll stay closer to the source material this time.

"There is no Sanctuary!"

This is indeed a book that could use a new movie version. I saw it as a kid. It came out a year before Star Wars when genre movies exploded. At the time this was THE sci-fi movie cuz they hardly ever made any before that.

I enjoyed the movie quite a bit.  Never read the book.

the book actually had its own sequel. I read the original and loved how detailed the world was outside the dome.

I loved the film when my dad showed it to me as a kid.  I should read the book....

I understand the technological improvements that could really assist the special effects, but I hate the idea of a remake.  The original is a classic that should be left alone.

Having read the book fully two years before the film was made, I HATED the movie. I had someone less...prissy..in mind for the part of Logan. The book was gritty and intense. The movie was like a romp in chiffon and spandex. Main point: in the book one's "lifeclock" went black at 21, not 30.

Fingers crossed for a much more faithful remake. I can see Dane DeHaan (sp?) from "Chronicle" in the Francis 7 role, with perhaps Josh Hutcherson (Hunger Games) as Logan 5.

Bring it!

Is Kevin Levine Ken's evil twin brother?

Kidding aside, I saw the movie, then read the book.  The movie told a better story where the book had much more action and grit.  They emphasize different aspects of story depending on the times; not trusting anyone older than 30 (book) and living only for material pleasure (movie).  But the movie was bound by the FX of the time and couldn't truly depict the scope of the book.

This story is begging to be redone, I agree.  I would like to see the movie's story against the backdrop of the book.  I'll take Carousel over the Sleepshop, but bring back the Gun........

As a 'teenager' I hated Carousel, it just looked silly,  even back in 76/77 when I first saw it. I still get a twinge of  embarrasment  watching it now.

The true horror of Nolan's book was that there was no where to run. No city to escape from, except a lucky few. The whole world was locked into this youth death cult. Citizens went willingly to the state enforced euthanasia Sleepshops. It was the ultimate extention of the 'live fast and die young' ethos.

The result of such a waste of the human potential was that their society was stagnating, in a terminal state decay and it was ultimately doomed even without the events Logan's actions put into play.

I'd look forward to a much closer adaption of Nolan's book than what was filmed 37 years ago, but I'll not be holding my breath on it happening before I hit my third Lastday.

Best Pick-Up Line EVER:  Michael York - "You're beautiful.  Let's have sex now!"
