A Look At DC Direct's WATCHMEN Figures

Action figures from Liz Sherman to The Dude to Superman!

At the New York Comic Con this year DC Direct unveiled their very first series of Watchmen movie figures (see pictures here). The first series included the modern versions of the Silk Spectre, The Nite Owl, an Ozymandias figure and, of course, a Rorschach. DC Direct promises to unveil Dr. Manhattan at the San Diego Comic Con but here is your first look at the Comedian (see main picture) and the first generation Nite Owl and Silk Spectre. Obviously DC Direct can run the gauntlet with this line and give us variations on all the characters. I hope they release comic book renditions of all the characters. The street date for the figures is February 2009.

Hellboy 2 variant of the week:

Two new images of Liz Sherman action figure were released earlier this week. Both will be in likeness of Selma Blair from Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. One will depict Liz before she is about to go super nova and the other is Liz displaying her full blown pyrokinetic energy. To see the original Liz figure check out the picture from the International Toy Fair here. She will feature 15 points of articulation and stand nearly 7 inches tall. Both of these figures are limited to 500 production pieces.

San Diego Comic Con TOY Exclusive Update:

Each year the San Diego Comic Con gets further and further away from comics. This is upsetting to some and something to bitch about for others. I describe it to people who have no idea what the SDCC is as a pop culture event that encompasses a wide range of Medias. An argument could be made that the nail is in the coffin for the comics at the SDCC with one of this year’s exclusive action figures. Entertainment Earth is producing an 8 inch tall figure of “The Dude” from the Coen Brothers’ cult classic The Big Lebowski.

Retro Toy of the Week:

Suckerman is the retro toy of the week. Made by Mattel in 1978, this 11 inch tall, bizarre looking hero covered in suction cups and did only one thing besides fly through the air. I bet you can guess that was. He was made of durable flexible vinyl and now can only be purchased on eBay. There were surprisingly a few listed in their original boxes.

Many of the mall toy stores are disappearing. There is one toy constant and that is Toys ‘R’ Us. Surprisingly enough there are still a few Superman Returns figures floating around Toys ‘R’ Us. Back in 2006, right before Superman Returns was released, Toys ‘R’ Us had two of their own exclusives. The first was a Jor-El hologram figure in the likeness of Marlon Brando. The other was a Jor-El and Kal-El two pack. If you didn’t know about them or felt as if you missed out, you haven’t because they are still there and marked down to practically nothing.

The new Dark Knight figures are up and out and in full force as soon as you walk in the door at Toys ‘R’ Us. The 7 inch line really does nothing for me and is obviously directed towards kids. Warner Brother’s is not missing a beat though by putting their DC Direct Dark Victory Batman figures out with the rest of the Dark Knight toys. Sure the figures have been out for a while but they are reasonability priced at $7.99. This is practically half the price what comic store retailers are asking for the same figures.

I would blame deadlines and lots of spare parts laying around for the Gordon fig.
