Joe’s Lost Questions. Bring Your Best Answers!

Greetings fellow LOST junkies. Turns out ABC stuck us with another recap after all. I don’t know why I thought they might create some new footage and treat the episode as a “What Really Happened to the Oceanic Six?” 20/20-style TV news report. Something similar was filmed for the Season 4 DVD set, so I was hoping for a comparable special rather than one more “get-you-up-to-date” show summary.

It certainly is worth wondering how the rest of the 2007 world feels about the 5 brave adult survivors of Oceanic flight 815 all disappearing again on Ajira flight 316.

First of all, there would be the lunatic fringe conspiracy theorists who, from the beginning, never bought into the Oceanic Six story.

These Lock Ness monster believers, with their claims of staged duplicate plane crashes in the Indian Ocean, and the disinterment of 324 graves in Thailand would have been quickly discounted at first. Of course when news broke about each member of the original Ocean Six (except for Aaron) “coincidentally” boarding another doomed flight the crackpot conjecturers would be instantly vindicated.

I’d imagine the 24 hour-a-day media circus on cable news programs would make the O.J. Simpson trial look like a 15 second YouTube clip of some skateboarder crushing his nads on a hand rail.

Rush Limbaugh would blame the liberal policies of presidential hopeful Barack Obama. (Remember, this is 2007 we’re talking about) Keith Olberman would point the finger at vast right-wing schemer, Dick Cheney, and Larry King would interview the woman who played the mother on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” about her new Italian dinner cookbook.

My point is, in the aftermath of such an improbable happenstance, there would be plenty of questions left unanswered, and since most of us agree the previous week’s episode, “Some Like it Hoth,” was an enjoyable chapter in the LOST series, it definitely didn’t generate the number of discussions as some of the previous installments. That said, this week I’ve decided to introduce some as of yet unanswered questions to the group, and see if we can’t use this impressively collective brain trust to solve some of the nagging mysteries of this show.

Naturally I expect and want to hear from the usual suspects (Hanso, Hobbs, LittleNell, Amish, Sleeper, Scriber, Xpal, Rip, Metuzalem, etc) but I’m also curious to from those of you who have never posted before. This would be a perfect forum to contribute with a question that has gnawed at you for years, or weigh in with an answer/theory of your own. Ok, let’s begin.

Question #1) What’s the deal With Cindy?

I’m going back to Seasons 1 and 2 for this oldie but goodie; who is Cindy? We know, or at least we’re meant to believe, Cindy was a flight attendant on Oceanic 815, but why was she taken by The Others? Has Cindy always been a secret Other? And while I’m on this tangent, what happened to the two children, Zach and Emma, Cindy seemed to be in charge of after the crash? Will we ever see those kids again?

Which brings me to my next question….

Question #2) Why Are Children So Special?

Early on we were told a number of times that the island views children as “special,” and we’ve seen evidence of WAAAAAAALLLTTTT possessing seemingly supernatural powers. A more important question to ask now however, may be why have they (the writers) seemingly dropped this once ostensibly important factor from the fabric of the show? My guess is we will see Walt again. They made too much of his powers in Season 1 to not pay those abilities off at some point in time.

My guess is Locke will recruit Walt as weapon to turn the tide at some point in the inevitable grand battle.

Question #3) Where the Hell are Rose, Bernard and Vincent?

If you’re a faithful reader to this blog, you already know I recently mentioned in the Some Like it Hoth comment box that Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have confirmed we will find out before this season ends what did happen to the island’s bickeringly blissful middle-aged married couple.

Personally I’ve felt they’ve been with The Others for the last three years - possibly as prisoners. We shall see.

Question #4) How Did Pierre Chang Lose His Hand?

We’ve all seen the orientation films and the many pseudonyms of Dr. Chang, but how, when and why did he lose his hand? And why so many different aliases, and why so many candle-influenced monikers? This guy has me baffled.

Question #5) How Can Hurley Interact With Charlie, Eko, Ana Lucia?

If you’ve read as many LOST-related on-line articles as I have, you are aware the Powers That Be have stated numerous times that dead people are dead – They even titled a recent episode along those lines. So if they are to be believed (which they are not, mind you) then how can Hurley play chess with Eko, get slapped by Charlie, and be pulled over by Officer Ana Lucia?

I do have a wild theory on this one, which I’ve never written or read anywhere. My hypothesis is right before they died, they were “drafted” if you will, to travel forward in time to inform Hurley of what needs to be done. Our heroes being sent on a time traveling mission, just an instant before Charlie drowns, or Ana Lucia is shot would explain how these “ghosts” are actually flesh and blood creatures, and are capable of not only interacting with Hurley, but also able to shed light on what his next move should be. This could explain their sudden disappearances, as well as their rather sullen attitudes.

Question #6) How ‘bout that Richard Alpert?

Seriously, what did that mean when Ben asked Alpert if he still remembered birthdays? Is Alpert a time traveler; and if so, what time period does he come from originally? Maybe he’s an immortal.

We’ve seen him on the island before John Locke was born, then we see him in the hospital with the infant Locke. Later he pop quizzes and ultimately fails a pre-teen Locke. We’ve seen him in the seventies, and we’ve seen him in 2004, and with the one exception of a brief fashion period in which he wore his hair long and dressed up like a pirate, he has always looked exactly the same, and it certainly doesn’t appear as if he’s aged throughout the decades.

Much has been made of the island’s Egyptian connection as of late, and I will break my arm patting myself on the back for being among the first to postulate Richard Alpert might have a connection to ancient Pharaohs or some such far out possibilities.

Of course I’m very open to the fact that it will likely turn out I wasn’t among the first to crack this riddle at all, but I was among the first to follow this trail down a well-planned blind alley.

Question #7) Who is the Women in the Painting

You all know the one I mean; the painting in Ben’s living room in New Otherton. Is it Juliet? Recent events make that idea more and more plausible. Harper did cryptically say to Juliet that, “You look just like her.”

Is the painting supposed to be of Ben’s mother? She was blonde, and died giving birth to Ben. Now Ben may not be a sentimentalist, but he does have a soft spot for mothers, and it would be perfectly reasonable to assume Ben would commission a painting of the woman who brought him into this world.

Or, is this a painting of a grown up Annie? Remember Annie was the little girl who gave Ben a wooden doll of herself on Ben’s birthday. Granted, Annie was a brunette, but women do reserve the prerogative to color their hair as they age. This line of questioning flows nicely into….

Question #8) Whatever Happened to Annie?

Ben was obviously sweet on young Annie, and it seemed as if his cute little classmate may have been crushing on the young Harry Potteresque, Ben Linus. Did Annie survive the Purge? Was she spared by Ben, or someone else? Did Ben have a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with her as the years went by? Did Ben lose his virginity to Annie at the annual Dharma High Sadie Hawkins (or perhaps Mrs. Hawking) Day Dance?

Question #9) Who is Jin’s Biological Father?

We’ve been left to believe that Mr. Kwon, a hard-working fisherman from a poor village may or may not be Jin’s biological dad. Mr. Kwon claimed to have had a relationship with a hooker who later dropped baby Jin off at Mr. Kwon’s door and told him the child was his. Now there’s nothing impossible to believe about that story, but it leaves me to wonder why even introduce the possibility of parental ambiguity if the writers aren’t going to pay that off. (I concede they may have already paid that off with Jin’s concern Sun’s baby might not have been his, but that doesn’t seem like enough to me.)

Question #10) Does Anyone Remember Henry Gale?

When we first met Ben, he was captured by Rousseau in a net and was assuming the identity of one-time Minnesota resident and hot air balloon enthusiast, Henry Gale. This tale is quickly debunked when Henry Gale’s corpse is dug up by Sayid and the real Henry Gale is a discovered to be mustachioed, black man with normal shaped eyes, while Ben is, in reality, a clean-shaven, bugged-eyed white guy.

Was the real Henry Gale actually just a fellow who loved recreational ballooning, or was he hired by Charles Widmore to find the island in an unorthodox method of travel? If Henry Gale did make a solo journey to the island in a hot-air balloon, who buried his body, and did he die in a crash, or was he discovered on the island and killed; AND if so, by whom?

In Conclusion

The next episode, the100th in the series looks like it may be the best of the season so far, so I have no doubt we’ll all have plenty to discuss after that airs, but until then I hope everyone’s up for a week-long discussion. Please feel free to answer one, some or all of these questions, and by all means, don’t be shy about posting your own LOST-related queries on these pages. I guarantee someone on here will have an opinion if not an answer.

So until next week, fire up your Hi-Def TV, make sure you hit the record function on your TiVo, keep your laptop nearby, load up that bong, (For some of us, LOST isn’t our only drug of choice.) and get ready to get LOST.

Damn it Joe you answered every question you asked.  What up with that man?

Here's a question that I want to know.  What on Earth is the "truce" Dharma & the Others have going on?  When Locke first went to Richard in the 50s the Others were killing American soldiers to keep them off the Island.

The Others are building hatches all round the Island and the Others don't do squat!

hanso 4/23/2009 4:45:02 PM

I also want to point out, that there is still a majorish death coming prior to the finale.  Ripum had mentioned it and I thought the death had been Charlotte's but nope, one more coming and EW's Ausiello says it's more major than he originally thought.

JoeArtistWriter 4/23/2009 5:14:51 PM

Come now Hanso, I didn't answer all the questions I posed, and besides, I was merely specualting on how Ben may have lost his cherry.

You can still weigh in on whatever happened to Annie, who is the woman in the painting, my theory on seconds-before-death time traveling Charlie and Ana Lucia

I've got to admit, there aren't too many major charaters I wouldn't miss. I suppose I could say goodbye to Juliet now - even though I've finally grown fond of her, and Faraday could get whacked and I wouldn't be too shaken up.

I can't imagine them whacking Jack, Locke, or Ben. They couldn't possibily kill off Sawyer - could they?. Hurley would be impossible to believe.

I've said it before, but I have a nagging feeling Sayid's number is up.

TheSleeper 4/23/2009 6:29:14 PM

Hah, I was just thinking about Henry Gale not too long ago, Joe.  I suppose he could just be a throwaway guy, but Cindy and the kids should not be.

As for Hurley's ability to interact with the dead -- don't forget that Russian dude with the eyepatch that came back from the dead in time to kill Charlie.  What was up with that?  I think he also claimed to be the last surviving member of the Dharma Initiative, but I can't remember if the producers admitted he was just lying or not.  Certainly, we haven't seen him in the 70s so far.

And my newest theory -- do you remember who Jack first encountered when he woke up on the island, way back at the beginning in Season 1?  That's right, Vincent!

Now that we know Anubis the canine-faced god figures prominently in the island's history, it's obvious that Vincent is actually Anubis.  Expect the series finale to be a giant showdown between Vincent and the smoke monster.

Seriously though, I think we might have a better idea why children are so important on the island once we get an explanation for why women can no longer give birth there.  I'm guessing we either get the answers with "The Incident," the season finale, or--given the way Lost finales usually get stretched out--we may not find out until early next season.

hanso 4/23/2009 7:34:55 PM

The Sleeper are you kidding man? Mikhail wasn't dead. Dude had more lives than a cat but he wasn't dead till he died killing Charlie.

Joe, my money on the character dying is Faraday.  And if it's supposed to be happening before the finale, then The Variable is pretty good episode to have him die.  This season has been about time travel so he became a major player.  After the show leaves 70s Dharma, which I'm guessing will take place in The Incident, there won't be much use for Faraday and his theories of time travel anymore.

HudsonTaco 4/23/2009 9:04:01 PM

I agree Sayid's days are numbered. Maybe I am remebering wrong but Wasen't Faraday wearing the same outfit as the people in the van who grabbed Miles last week. I think its possible Farady might know what lies in the shadow of the statue.

I have been wondering about the Kids and the Flight attendant for 3 years now and I have a feeling its just one of those things we will never know.

And just for shits and giggles check this out

I'm sticking to my theory that Alpert is the islands caretaker and will live as long as the "island" does.  thinking down the egypt track he could be a fallen god, forced to live his days in th emortal realm, or perhaps a high priest of Anubis granted eternal life.  I also wouldn't be suprised too see his mummified corpse at some point either.  how's that for a scattershot of theories :)

gimpythewonder 4/23/2009 10:07:28 PM

Joe i can't buy your Hurley theory.  Its been confirmed ( i beleive) that the rest home staff can't see the person he's talking to.  Isn't that why he asked the nurse if she could see Locke a few eps ago?

JoeArtistWriter 4/23/2009 10:24:01 PM

Gimpy, don't discount me yet pal. The at least one patient at the insane asylum saw Charlie visit Hurley. Also, Hurley was only freaked about Locke when he realized Locke was still alive, and yet somehow managed to get off the island. Thank you for the scattershot theories. They will land somewhere and surely hit someone.

HudsonTaco, thanks for contributing. That same Emerson clip was posted on last week's blog too, but definitely worth seeing if you're a Ben fan and haven't see it yet. (Also worth seeing for that matter)

I wish I knew why, but I think it's the mention of a MAJOR death that has me guessing Sayid rather than Faraday. Maybe I'm a purist, but I can't consider Faraday a MAJOR player yet. To be fair, it took me two seasons to accept Desmond as a MAJOR.

Hanso, as I stated, your Faraday theory is highly plausible. Probabaly the most plausible if we're considering Faraday a MAJOR player... which as yoou know I don't... and as I assume... you do.

Sleeper, I don't think Henry Gale is a throwaway, but then again I bought into the FUCKING MUSTARD line.

I have no doubt Vincent will play a very key role in all of this when everything is said and done. Carlton Damon have hinted as much, and I don't believe they were throwing out a red herring. Vincent, and more importantly where he's been when he's gone, will play a big part to solving some of these mysteries.

Ahhh. I love a paragraph that makes me look like I know what I'm talking about.

gimpythewonder 4/23/2009 10:26:29 PM

I can see the Sayid death as his character story has pretty much run its course, he found his woman, she died, he got all vengeancy, finished that and is looking for purpose.  he shot Ben and it was innefectual, i don't see wht they have left to do w/ him.  they still have Sawyer and Jin for local bad-assness, i see it.  plus as cool as he's been as a character it wouldn't kill off fans of the show.

but I can also see Hurley going out trying to stop the hatch.  perhaps it'll be the payoff to the numers storyline.  this would hit like a ton of fried chicken to the gut and would piss off everyone, the characters and th efans.  and remember w/ the big battle coming up, you don't need a teddy bear in war.  man just thinking it  hurts, which is why it could happen
