LOST: The Constant

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Monday, March 03, 2008

Desmond is one of those fascinating characters that I’ve been interested in learning more about. His episodes are seldom a let down and this new one is my favorite of them. We find him and Sayid on the helicopter heading directly into a storm because he has to follow the path laid out by Daniel in order to get back to the freighter. The action starts when a clap of lightening starts Desmond bouncing back and forth between his current situation and his past. He doesn’t seem to know Sayid and as he lands on the freighter he doesn’t know anything about what he’s been up to since he was in the military back in 1996.

On the boat, we finally learn what’s been going on with Minkowski. He and a buddy got bored and took a boat out to look at the island and they both began experiencing the same issues that Desmond is currently going through. Apparently, the side effect of the trip eventually shuts the brain down. After a quick phone call to Daniel back on the island Desmond knows what he has to do to save himself. Desmond has to find Daniel back in 1996 and give him numbers to plug into his machine to make it work. Past Daniel tells Desmond that to save his mind he must find his constant, someone he knows in both 1996 and 2004. Of course, Desmond seeks out Penny. Up to this point, the romance on LOST has been sort of fun but mostly overly melodramatic. There’s something different about the romance between Desmond and Penny. The two actors have great chemistry and in the series they have the most history of any of the pairings on the show. The final moments of the episode with Desmond finally making the necessary connection with Penny were sweet and they carried some impact. As far as revelations from Penny’s phone call, we don’t get any. Desmond now knows that Penny has been looking for him all along though.

The most interesting twist in this episode is that Daniel seems to have been using or will be using Desmond to cure himself. Daniel has been a mess since he first appeared and I believe we may now know what’s been going on with him. Could it be that his little radiation machine gave him a milder dose of what happened to Minkowski and Desmond? His journal tells him that Desmond will be his constant if anything happens. So did Daniel save himself while saving Desmond or will he use Desmond later to save himself? This closing beat wasn’t as big as they’ve been the last few weeks but the episode overall was so intriguing that I wasn’t at all disappointed.

On the island, Daniel seems to be busting to tell the castaways what’s truly going on but Charlotte holds him back from spilling all the beans. She has sort of played it innocent so far but from the previews it looks like we’re in for a change. The big questions I came away with though are about they mysterious inhabitants of the freighter. When the helicopter landed it appeared that a few thugs just came out to greet it. It seems to me that if a helicopter full of 815 landed that someone important would have made an appearance. Even more intriguing is who opened the door to the sick bay and let Sayid and Desmond out to find the radio. I felt pretty confident that Ben’s inside man busted the radio in a continued attempt to keep the island a secret but who let Sayid out to fix it? Are there two factions working against each other behind the scenes on the freighter? The freighter is this season’s hatch but this time we didn’t have to wait until the end of the season to get inside. Now, I just want more information! This is one of the really fantastic conversation inducing episodes of Lost that I’m sure I’ll want to come back to after we know more about Daniel and the rest of the people on freighter’s motivations. This episode was written by the masters of this series and it shows.

Good review. Excellent episode. But no mention of the auction scene? Think that will be very telling in the future.

I do think this is the best show on television but I have to confess my confusion and lack of understanding of what really took place in this last episode...I understood what was taking place in this episode but I do not see where it fits in the overall story and I'm sure that will be revealed more but it seems as though it will add more questions that I hope will be answered in one way or another in the future here...A Spot on review I agree with...
I have to admit I did tear up a bit at the end because I really thought that Penny was not going to answer the phone and that Desmond was going to die but she came through in a big way and that means one of my favorite characters is going to be around for awhile longer...Now I hope that Lock stays around to the end and that he somehow survives, my other favorite character in the show...

That was such a great episode! Desmond is definitely one of my favorite characters and all his Desmond-centric eps have been good. I admit that I too, teared up a little when Penny answered and they talked to each other.
I am surprised no one mentioned the auction scene. How cool was that? The auction being about the Black Rock ship, that went missing, which ironically is Lost on the island.
Does anyone remember what year it was in the last episode with Kate, because now we finally have a marker as to what year it is, as far as when they get off the island. 1994.
Right now Lost is the best show on tv, hands down.

I have a request for Mania.com.

For those of us who don't watch Lost and don't care about it, it'd be nice if we didn't have to see an article about the show every freakin' day.

And yes, I know I can ignore the articles, which I do.

Actually I believe the calendar said it was December 24, 2004. I think Kate's was in 2008 but not really sure.

I loved the Black Rock mention and hope we get to see what the logbook says.

Another great episode. I agree with Evilmonkey, I want to know what is in the journal. With this show you can be sure this was not a throw-away reference.

Really, Taydor there is like an article about Lost maybe once a week, which is usually the review, just like every other show they review. If you ignore the articles like you say, then why even post that comment.

This episode was confusing but sweet. Desmond is also one of my fave characters from the show. All that consiciousness jumping from 1996-2004 was a bit confusing in my opinion but like the review i think the episode was an A.

Here is what I think from watching the show.
1.I think Charles Widmore(Penny's dad) will turnout to be one of the main villains in this show and I believe he's involved with putting Oceanic 815 in those underwater trenches. It has to be a powerful group or man to be able to pull that off since the real Oceanic 815 is on the island and Charles Widmore has tons of cash and seems like a powerful dude. Plus by that auction scene I think it's obvious that he has interest on the island, by buying the diary he was hoping to acquire some knowledge on the whereabout of the Island perhaps. I thought it was pretty cool that the diary belonged to the Hanso family.
2. The mystery man sabotaging the boat, I'd be willing to bet that it's Michael. Or maybe it's Walt and Michael is the captain :) Anyway, I'm pretty sure Michael is on that freighter and my money is that he's the spy.
3. I'm not sure if Faraday actually cured himself by using Desmond as his constant because the guy acted the same way back in 1996. He seemed at bit off in that time also, maybe smart people are weird like that. I think he remembered that conversation with Desmond and knew that there might be a chance he might travel himself so he copied that note down just in case.

I have a question for you guys, If there is a time paradox or time difference between the Island and the rest of the world, it took the chopper about a day for something that should've taken 20 mins according to Juliet, how can it still be december 2004 which is what the calendar said?
Shouldn't it be like 2006 or something due to the time difference or did the freighter people purposely place that calendar there?

ArkoblaConn • Mar 03, 2008, 06:06am •
Hanso, remember that Sayid said something like "I didn't think it was that late already" when he saw the calendar.

I thought this episode was one of the recent best. There was mild confusion as to what was happening, but it tied itself together very well and had a very satisfactory ending.

And to the person who complained about the Lost articles here...I say ...Bring more on! Lost deserves plenty more conversation.
