LOST - One of Them

If only Sayid had the same cultural heritage as his American companions, he might have noticed that Henry Gale travelling from a distant land via hot air balloon had a little more in common with L. Frank Baum than English millionaire Richard Branson. After what I've often criticized as a shaky second season, LOST has started a series of home runs here in the heart of the sophomore run. "The Long Con" and "One of Them" show what the creators are capable of accomplishing when they're not worried about stringing the viewers along with endless unsolved riddles. Sure, we don't know the nature of Henry's mission to this side of the island, but the story was structured in such a way as to make his presence a fulcrum upon which to lever Sayid's tale. It's a subtle distinction, but it is everything when it comes to producing great episodes of such a delicately balanced series.

When Sayid first turned his eyes toward Shannon, it seemed to undermine his devotion to Nadia. Here was a revolutionary woman who had won his heart and turned him against his people in the hopes of winning her love. Then, as if a network executive desired more sex in the series, the noble Sayid suddenly fell for the vacuous Shannon. Though I still consider the plot twist a serious misstep that robs Sayid of the richness the writers initially crafted for him, his interrogation of Henry finally turned his love of Shannon into something useful. If the entire arc was simply to set-up his impassioned inquisition, then it was worthwhile.

While Naveen Andrews flexes his Thespic muscles, the episode offers up one of the best arrays of guest stars seen thus far on a series that attracts quality talent. The always dependable Mira Furlan is back for a too brief turn as Danielle Rousseau. Thankfully, her return engagement will continue into March when the next episode airs. The thoughtful mention that our cast are "Others" as far as she is concerned provides a dash of insight into the still elusive character. Clancy Brown, last featured as the corrupt preacher Justin Crowe in HBO's short-lived CARNIVLE offers an atypical perspective on the US forces that invaded Iraq during the first Gulf War. Here we have a businessman turning an enemy soldier into a torturer and tossing him a grand in greenbacks for his trouble. Brown's performance is restrained, but effective. Lindsey Ginter's Sergeant Austen keeps alive the six degrees of separation that remains an ever more apparent ingredient in the show's make-up, but the episode's most interesting visitor has got to be Michael Emerson as Henry Gale. Emerson's made a career on TV of playing sociopaths. From serial decapitator William Hinks on THE PRACTICETHE INSIDE, Emerson has made his mark as a killer. Could the producers of LOST be using the actor's baggage to mislead a savvy audience? It's always possible, but time will have to tell.

With a brief hiatus before the next original episode, the intense finale of "One of Them" will doubtless linger in the minds of those who ponder the show's myriad mysteries. Me--I'm wondering about Hurley's stolen food--there was something very Village-like about the Dharma Initiative labelling...

Man I love this show. The past few episodes have been ok. The first arc of the 2nd serie was excellent.

Still happy to see Micheal gone....it's so quiet now...so nice...so peacefull.....He's such a dum-ass...

I love lost and particularly like The Lord of the Flies feel the series is getting, but I do have one
complaint....

Why are they incapable of showing me then two original episodes without a rerun lately?

You know i'd be pretty happy if he show started focusing less on flashbacks and more on the here and now. There comes a point when the audience grows tired of getting strung along. I think Lost really needs to make a point and make it stick, but that's just me

I don't want to lose the flashbacks. OK, an episode here and there without a flashback wouldn't kill me, but getting to know the motivations behind these people's current decisions is half the fun for me.

What I'd really love to see is a Lost ep where they focus on the background chracters. You know, all those people we see in the background. It would be really cool to have one episode where we only saw the "cool clique" out of focus in the background and the nameless souls trapped with them got to have their day in the sun.

the flashbacks are ok when they do show something new behind a characters motivation. Take last weeks Sawyer flashback, all it did was show him being a con man, ok we get it, Sawyer is a con man. Sayid is a torturer, yes we already knew that. I just would be happy if every once in a while they threw us a bone and gave some sort of answer to any of the questions they have raised, just a small one. I was talking w/ a co-worker about favorite tv shows and when I brought up lost, he wasn't at all into it because "there's no closure" and he's right nothing ever gets resolved in any way. I'm all for bringing on more mysteries such as why would the clock use Egyptian hieroglyphics after it hit 0, but we still don't know why there was a polar bear on the island from episode what, like 3. I think that the next episode w/ Claire when she was kidnapped will be great, there is a relevant flashback.

Yeah that clock thing was trippy. Another thing that I was wonder was did Locke finish putting in the numbers? I mean it doesn't show him doing this, in fact it shows him only three or four numbers into "the numbers" when the clock hits zero. Then without seeing if he's finished bam it goes back to the beginning of the count down...creepy.

The Lost message boards for the most part are crap, but if you go on there right after the show, the people on there research and analyze everything. For example, they found two meanings for the symbols on the counter. One is, if they are egyptian hieroglyphs than in that exact order they mean "to cause death". The second one is, those symbols are commonly used in nuclear missile silos and represent the launch of a nuclear missile. The guy Sayid was torturing in the hatch said that his name is Henry Gale and that he crashed on the island in a hot air balloon. Henry Gale is from Wizard of Oz and that is the name of Dorothy's uncle. The wizard uses a hot air balloon as a method of travel in Oz. Coincidence? Probably not if he is an other lying to someone that is probably not familiar with The Wizard of Oz. Now, are these things true? Not sure, I'm not up to doing the research but in the past these guys have been pretty close.

I can't get into Lost messageboards because I would never sleep! I read one link someone sent me and it blew my mind. It was talking about the prevalance of octagons in the show, and that one is true.

When Michael goes to get his son back (with a gun) and Jack decides to go and find him, the Others and their leader surround Jack, Locke, etc in the shape of what looks like an octagon.

These last two shows have been excellent. The Long Con episode was the best so far with its twists and turns. It also sets up a lot of tension for future episodes.

What really interested me were thew symbols that appeared when the timer went past zero. as the tiles flipped, they got prograssively deeper and deeper red until you get to see three symbols, one of which is some type of bird and two other symbols that aren't clear to me. One looked like a rocket or missle.

As for the series going in and out of repeats, just feel lucky sweeps was going on, or you would have had no new episodes. I think they're taking their time to make sure Lost fans don't get mad at poorly executed episodes. If so, I say I'm ok with repeats.
