LOST: No Place Like Home Part 1

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, May 18, 2008

This is part one of the three hour season finale and it’s obvious why the producers wanted three hours to tie up the season – a lot is happening and a lot more is on the way. The episode opens with the Oceanic Six arriving home together. This is one of those scenes that are not necessary but it’s highly anticipated nonetheless. Seeing the six of them carrying the weight of the events on the island on their backs was riveting. There’s some discussion prior to their appearance in front of the press with Jack and the gang going over the story they’ve decided to tell. It’s pretty obvious that the Six have been adhering to some fake story but it was good to see the setup for that story played out. The story was told to the press a bit too stiffly by an Oceanic rep (Admiral Cane from BSG).

The majority of the action in this episode happened on the island though – and it happened all over the island. There’s a lot of dashing back and forth across the island with various groups running into each other and changing course, typical Lost stuff. Everything will come to a head at the Orchid base over the next few episodes. This week Locke, Hurley, and Ben went to the Orchid to “move the island” and Kenny and his men are waiting there because they know that’s where Ben will go. Jack and Sawyer went to the Orchid out of concern for Hurley. Eventually Sayid and Kate race into the forest to catch up with Jack and Sawyer to back them up. So, yeah, there’s a lot of back and forth through the forests of this mysterious island. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it just really stood out in this episode more than others. Anyway, at the base Ben – not surprised by anything as usual – gave Locke instructions on how to access the Orchid base and then surrendered himself to Keamy who responded by knocking Locke out with his gun. Ben is a fascinating character on this series and many of the show’s questions center around his character. Seeing him submit himself to Keamy was intriguing but in a way not surprising.

Alpert has been appearing in flashbacks here and there but this week he finally returns to the here and now with a bunch of “Others” to capture Sayid and Kate. Many people on the island appear to age but not Alpert. Could it be that Alpert is more connected to island than the show has revealed? Could he even be Jacob? The creators have done a good job of sprinkling him into the series just enough to make him interesting. It’s good to see him back on the island in current time. Hopefully in the next two hours there’ll be some new information about him. It’s also about time the “Others” came back into the picture. They’ve been off the show for too long.

We’ve seen the Oceanic Six but they don’t match the first six castaways that left the island for the freighter with Daniel. Unfortunately other than Jin, Sun, and Aaron the rest of the inhabitants of the raft are probably red shirts. One of the best scenes in the episode comes when Jin and Sun meet Michael on the freighter. They didn’t accept him or trust his story, as they shouldn’t have. Jin can be a fairly intimidating presence and that presence comes through when says to Michael that he understands what Michael is saying. Sun can be pretty tough herself and she gets a chance to show it in a riveting flash forward scene with her father.

Michael did fix the engine but apparently a boat load of explosives is messing with the instruments the ship needs to navigate so they are just stuck in the water. Obviously the device strapped to Keamy’s arm controls the explosives. The people on the freighter, not the castaways that have come to the freighter but the actual deckhands and such, are the most cardboard background characters that have ever appeared on the series. It’s also a little odd just how few of them there are considering how large the boat is. This is a minor complaint but it’s worth mentioning because it stretches even to Keamy’s mercenaries. Who are they?

So much happens in this episode it’s almost worth multiple viewings. Information saturation was expected since the producers asked the network for an additional hour to tie up the season. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the creators of the series, wrote a deep episode with solid setups for what’s sure to be a riveting finale. All cylinders were firing this week from the Sun and Hurley-centric flash forward to Ben’s mysterious ego, to Sawyer’s angry return to the group. This week appeared to be more of a setup for answers to questions rather than simply answering them but the anticipated answers are big ones. The two week wait to the season finale is going to be a long one.

How in the world can the opening scene of this episode be unnecessary if then you say seeing the 6 carrying the weight of the events of the island, riveting?

This first hour of the season finale was great, as Lost as been throughout the season but I'll save my comments until I've seen the whole 3hr finale.

Things I liked about this episode was the fact that we will finally get to see The Orchid station. If you have no clue what The Orchid is, I suggest you youtube the orchid to get an idea of things that may be taking place in that station.

Can't wait to see the deal the 6 end up making to get off the island and what happened to the rest of the castaways.
*******spoiler*********

next 2 hours will focuse on Claire & Sawyer

I thought that same thing reading that hanso...that was the furtsest thing from unnecessary as it could be. They looked completly deflated unlike how being rescued should be.

Whatever scene takes place when the "story of survival" comes together I'm sure will be breathtaking. Maybe even one of the best scenes of Lost ever. It's the one question that has lingered the entire season and since the first flashforward has took place.

Hanso--is the Claire and Sawyer thing fact??

I agree that the opening with the O6 getting off the plane was absolutely necessary to the storyline. Sure, it reinforced the fact that Jack seemed to be the only one of the group who felt their actions were justified from the beginning (and he obviously had a change of heart given the flash forward in "Through the Looking Glass"), but it was necessary and interesting nonetheless.

The episode absolutely deserved its A+. I have to disagree that the island events took prevalence in the episode because the amount of time given to each set of scenes was split nearly 50/50. Most flashes take up between 10-15 minutes of each episode, but this was cut almost equally. That may well have been the effect of having flash forwards involving the O6 as opposed to centering on one character, but I think this is a tell-tale sign of things to come in the show.

I think the show's format is going to change dramatically for its final two seasons. I think we've seen the end of flashes going backward and forward, and that starts with this episode. We already know the season is going to end with the O6 getting off the island, so the opening of this episode has to occur in the near future. I think the end of the season will meet the opening of this episode, a la Memento. The backwards scenes in that film eventually met the progressive scenes at the end of that film, and I think the final two seasons of Lost will be all progressive scenes involving both the O6 and the people left on the island. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Overall, May 29 can't get here fast enough!!

Needaname- I can't say that it's a fact 100%. I got the info from Wikipedia, and they've always been accurate with the information they've provided in terms of what character will be featured in the upcoming episode. I went back to check it out see if they had pulled it from a reliable source but now they've taken it out, so maybe it was false or maybe people aren't supposed to know yet and they leaked it inadvertenly. So don't hold me responsible if it turns out false :)

Rgtchtiger - That Memento idea sounds good, wouldn't be surprised if it turns out like that.

One other thing I noticed about the episode - when Desmond discovers the C4 explosives in the radio room, he runs to get Michael's attention. He yells out, "Michael" in front of everyone else around. Shouldn't that have blown Michael's cover on the boat? Everyone on the boat knows him as Kevin Johnson, and I would think that anyone who saw him respond to the name Michael would start asking questions.

Speaking of Michael, I'm a little surprised that Sayid didn't say anything to Kate about him being on the freighter. Granted, they were in a real hurry when he arrived on shore with his raft, but I would think that's important enough news to tell Kate the first opportunity he gets.

These are just two minor nitpicks within the episode. I still give the episode an A+ and can't wait to see how the finale ends.

Rgtchtiger...I think the rest of the people on the boat could care less who Michael is or is not at this point...The Captain was just killed and I'm sure word has traveled to everyone left on the boat that there mission is no longer one of rescue but one where the assholes who just killed the captain are going to kill everyone on the Island, these recent events probably have the crew wondering what the hell is going on...
