LOST Season 1 and 2 on Blu-ray

Lost's First Two Seasons Go Blu

LOST Season 1 and 2 are finally on Blu-ray

The summertime brings a huge gap to our television watching. While some shows like True Blood premiere their new season other shows like LOST have us waiting until 2010. Released for the first time, finally, are seasons one and two of LOST on Blu-ray. I found it strange that this hit TV show hadn’t released Blu-ray editions of their first seasons before considering seasons three and four are already on Blu-ray, with season five being released on December 8th, 2009.The supplemental material is intoxicating with all the previously unseen flashbacks that didn’t air in the original broadcasts. The character connections in season two drove this veteran fan crazy and reminded me how much fun the show is, erasing the weeks of frustration it will take for it to come back on.

When one watches a show over again things change. We see characters in a different light. John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) for one went from creepy and untrustworthy to the spiritual hero of the show. Other characters died off completely leaving many of their scenes and moments meaningless. As with any show that ended like LOST’s last season did the possibilities are limitless.  While watching the first few episodes, when anything was possible, there were several things that have changed over time while watching LOST.

Having the knowledge of who lives and who dies changes a lot about a show. Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and Shannon (Maggie Grace) quickly become the Niki (Kiele Sanchez) and Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) of the first two seasons. Speaking of those extra cast members I started looking at each and every extra to see who would be there from episode to episode. Ethan (William Mapother) doesn’t officially show up until episode nine but he wasn’t blending in like Ben (Michael Emerson) told him to as we all saw in a flashback. The flashbacks are even a little different. The first few featuring what happened on the plane don’t have that flashback sound effect. Later episodes adopt this but not early on.

In the beginning there was also a lot more “sexier” moments. Sure there wasn’t the intrigue that the show had as its hook but now seeing Kate (Evangeline Lilly), Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Shannon half naked really seems out of place. Though still much appreciated. A big red herring is how much blood the smoke monster spills in the pilot with the pilot (Heroes’ Matt Parkman and J.J. Abramsalumni Greg Grunberg). Did it ever spill blood after that? I can’t remember but I am sure going to look for it.

Everything matters now in watching LOST. I found myself writing rewinding and writing down the numbers form Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan) message. Locke’s explanation ofBackgammon to Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) means more now than it ever did before. Thankfully they wrote Walt off the show because how else were they going to explain that kid’s growth spurt since they had been there for only a 100 plus days? Yet, Walt’s exodus from the show makes you wonder how special was he and where were they going to go with that plot thread?

I hate to agree with packaging or advertisements but LOST on Blu-ray is the way the show was meant to be seen. In 1080p each brow that is covered with sweat and each hair on their unshaven faces are as clear as if you were standing next to Locke and Hurley (Jorge Garcia). The state of Hawaii should just send out these Blu-rays to tourist agencies because the island in its entire splendor is breathtaking in HD. Never have I wanted to visit Hawaii more. Though this is probably for the first time I had to turn the sound down. Usually one plays with the dials trying to get the sound at the perfect decibel but these Blu-rays filled the room with the sound of the ocean, gun fire and of course the smoke monster. In a single word, awesome.

Eventually some uber fan will splice LOST together in chronological order. Perhaps even the minds behind LOST will see some crazy benefit into putting a book together of all their used plot threads that for whatever reason, drunk driving or otherwise, were never used. This summer has some huge gaps in both genre television and movies leaving us plenty of time to get LOST.

The raging debate on Blu-ray. I'm still going to say its a waste of money until they start lowering the prices. I still can't see how this format is going to survive long haul until they do that.  BUT that being said I would recommend all Lost fans who want this on Blu-ray to wait until the series is done then they'll release the complete series on blu-ray just like Battlestar Galatica is this summer.

dbrock06 6/16/2009 7:56:52 AM

I agree with you Hobbs.  You know they are going to release the "Definitive Edition" once the series is over.  You are better off just waiting for that and all the extras that will include.

I will be buying Spaceballs on Blu-Ray.  One of my all time favorite Comedies.  Ludicrous Speed, GO!

Sanity 6/16/2009 8:14:30 AM

Hobbs, I agree.  With a long show like this, the combined series on blu-ray would be the way to go.  I personally have bought the separate seasons on regular dvd's so I can share them with family and friends that don't have blu-ray players yet.

I am buying movies on blu-ray though.  Amazon has a lot of older, and some newer blu-rays for great prices.  And they look SO much better than regular dvd's.  It's totally worth it.

redhairs99 6/16/2009 12:33:45 PM

I'm still not sold on the whole Blu-Ray tech.  I mean the players are too expensive and the movies and tv shows themselves are WAY too high.  I just don't see Blu-Ray catching on "long-term."  I hate that it'll go this way, but I think that we're moving closer to just having nothing but downloaded content.  Anyway, upconverted dvd looks pretty darn good to me and I haven't seen enough from Blu-Ray to sway me.

Also, this column lists the credits for American Gangster as Armand Assante, Josh Brolin, Kevin Corrigan, and Russell Crowe.  WTF?  Armand Assante and Kevin Corrigan are basically little more than cameos.  And, Where's Denzel?  The only credits you need to list for this film are Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Driector, Ridley Scott.  The alone shows how badass this film is if you haven't seen it.  I still think if this film would have been released a month or month and a half later that it would have OWNED the Oscars that year.  The Academy really doesn't give much attention to films released before November (granted there are exceptions, but they are few).

Hobbs 6/16/2009 1:24:05 PM

I kind of agree with you redairs...I think blu-ray would boom if they lowered the prices to regular DVD prices.  Then I would make the upgrade because it would be replacing an old technology.  If they don't do that then I can't see how they will survive especially in this economic climate. Does it really cost the studios that much more money to make a blu-ray vs. regular DVD?  Does anyone know?

I'm not sold on the whole download thing...I like it for "hanso" movies that we would not otherwise pay to see but I wouldn't like it to replace my DVD's.

redhairs99 6/16/2009 3:32:36 PM

Hobbs, I'm not trying to advocate that Hollywood more to a non-physical medium.  Personally, I want something tangible if I'm shelling out $15 or more per movie.  I just think that's where things are heading.

Whiskeymovie 6/17/2009 6:19:03 AM

I gotta say, I have been a collector of dvd's since they first came out and have over 2700 movies, but I am now hooked on Blu-ray. I have about 200 Blu-ray so far. It is so much better than regular dvd's, truly. And anyone who is thinking about buying blu-ray, I say go with the PS3. It is the best deal. A game system and a blu-ray player. That is win win. I also just picked up a LED TV, and holy shit, it really makes the blu-ray pop. It is so choice, if you have the means, I reccemond picking one up.
