How you feel about the final season of Lost and, in particular, the series finale episode, largely depends on whether you like your conclusions to be wrapped nice and tidy in a neat little box, or if you don’t mind a little bit of the mystery left just out of reach. In general, Lost Season Six did a good job of tying up a lot of the loose ends that were created during the show’s first five seasons. The final fate of the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 was answered in a gruelingly emotional finale that defied you to not shed a tear or two.
Season Six kicked off with the two-part “LA X” and deals with the aftermath of the detonation of the nuclear bomb at the end of the Season Five finale. Throughout Lost’s first five seasons the show relied heavily on flashback episodes to tell its character’s stories but this episode introduced the “flash sideways”. The explosion created two separate timelines in the Lost Universe, the main storyline with the survivors on the island, and an alternate reality where the plane crash never took place. Some characters are changed dramatically in this alternate timeline, particularly Sawyer who is now a detective and partnered with Miles. Kate is still a prisoner of a U.S. Marshal but escapes when the flight lands in L.A and hijacks a taxicab in which Claire is a passenger. Jack discovers that the airline has lost his father’s coffin, and Locke is still paralyzed. Despite the fact the crash never took place in this timeline, the various characters fates still end up intertwining and culminate in the series finale.
Back on the island, Jacob is dead but through flashbacks we learn a little of his origin as well as the origin of the “man in black/smoke monster” now taking the form of Locke. Good and Evil? Opposite sides of the same coin? Take your pick…We know at least that the man in black cannot leave the island unless he kills these survivors and we learn that many of them are selected by Jacob as candidates to become the island’s new overseer. Another of the mysteries finally answered is that of Richard Alpert and his immortality.
The season’s 15th episode, “Across the Sea” was one of the most controversial. It revealed the origin of Jacob, and his brother, the man in black (never referred to by name) and their mother Claudia. This episode established the division between the brothers, simplifying it (perhaps too much) down to a simple board game between the two. This may be the one episode that revealed too much. Their allegorical natures were not as interesting as they were when their origins were still a mystery.
It’s difficult for any final episode to ever live up to the hype and to fan’s expectations and you’re never going to please everyone. Trying to answer every question and plot dead ends would be impossible and frankly pointless. In the end, it’s not important to reveal all of the secrets but rather to send the show out properly and the final episode, “The End” did just that. It allowed Lost fans to reconnect with characters that had not been seen in several seasons like Boone and Charlie. Lost did what few shows get a chance to do, namely to go out on its own terms, following the path it charted six years earlier. Its legacy is that it was a show like none other…A show that mixed elements of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, drama, and romance into one big steaming pot of TV stew.
Blu-ray Extras
There’s a host of extras on the five-disc Blu-Ray set and none of them are more important that the first one…
New Man in Charge (12:00) This mini-episode serves as the series epilogue. With Jack’s death, Hurley was left in charge of the island with Ben remaining to help. This episode reveals a bit of what the two did on their time and more importantly, reveals a few more of the mysteries of the show. Ben arrives in Guam to tell a couple of Dharma employees that their services are no longer needed. For 20 years they’ve been packing supplies that have been delivered to the island. Along with a nice severance pay, Ben allows each man to ask one question…One of those questions is about the Island’s infamous polar bears. Ben plays the men an old Dharma Initiative video that also reveals a couple of other secrets.
You might think “New Man in Charge” refers to Hurley but you’d be incorrect. Hurley’s last duty is to find his own successor…a character who had seemingly been forgotten about. Great Feature!!!
The End: Crafting the Final Season (38:00) A look at the final season of lost through the eyes of the producers and cast and their sadness about the show ending
