LOST: The Shape of Things to Come

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Saturday, April 26, 2008

Lost returned this week an hour later with an exciting and extremely complex episode. At first glance, it doesn’t seem so, but the seeds planted in this episode add layers to an already complicated episode making it even deeper but also a bit tougher to follow.

On the island, everything is straightforward and fairly hi octane with soldiers attacking the barracks determined to kidnap Ben and Daniel finally revealing a truth to Jack that’s was inevitable. The body of the doctor from the freighter washes up on shore with his throat cut and almost simultaneously soldiers attack the barracks with Ben’s daughter Alex as a hostage. A standoff between the soldiers and Ben ensues with a gun pointed at Alex’s head at the center of the conflict. Ben has always been confident and he seems so in this situation too. When the soldier puts a bullet in Alex’s skull,Ben is literally shocked. The last thing you want on the island is to push Ben to the point at which he loses control and this execution does just that. Ben slips into a cave and suddenly the badass smoke monster kills all of the soldiers. This sequence was stunning with the execution being a real shocker and the following attack being exhilarating. It’s scenes like this that make lost such a thrill to watch.

The flashbacks are where the complexities are the most prevalent in this episode. Ben’s a real globe trekker and often when he arrives in various locales, he doesn’t always know the day and year in which he has landed. It had previously seemed that Ben was somehow forcing Sayid to work for him. It’s not surprising that Sayid is taking missions from Ben of his own accord. It would just be too easy if what we were previously led to believe was in fact the reality of the series. It did seem that Sayid agreed to work with Ben to easily with almost no questions asked. Why wasn’t Sayid curious about Ben’s interest in the murder of Sayid’s wife? Ben always has a hidden agenda and Sayid is usually the least trusting, so why not even a question from Sayid? The answer is that Sayid either already knows something or we’ll learn why later. It’s the closing moments of the episode, and of the flashback that really makes things more complicated. Ben confronts Charles Widmore and discusses the revenge he’ll be seeking and the changing of the rules of the game. Ben mentions these “rules” several times in the episode. Widmore replies that the island was his and it’ll be his again. Was Widmore connected to Dharma? The age difference between Widmore and Ben doesn’t seem exactly right if that’s the case but that could have something to do with the weird time displacement on the island.

Many more questions this week and only one big answer mark a riveting episode of Lost. It’s apparent that the creators intend to get through a lot of information before this season ends so it’s good news that they got their extra hour of season three. I’m sad to see Russo actually dead having never been given a flashback of her own and leaving the series still just as mysterious as when she first appeared. Within two episodes, three characters are dead and another almost bites the rocket, as it were. So, it appears the creators mean business from here on out and that couldn’t be better news.

Ben's becoming such a great & complex character on this series. I like the fact that he's in the middle of just about everything important surrounding the story arcs.

And Sawyer...Wow, what a change with his character. Hugo and Charlie used to be a great dynamic of the series and Sawyer has readily stepped into Charlie's shoes as a replacement.

My older sister was shitting kittens when they pointed the guns at Sawyer in this episode. In shows of the past, we would say "Yeah, right, they won't kill him off".

But it seems the death toll is adding up over here and nobody really feels safe if we haven't seen their flash forward by now.

When they pointed the gun at Sawyer, there was definitely some "Nooooooooooo" thoughts going on.

Alex's death was brutal as well.

Great season so far. Superb writing and storytelling. Loving it.

I agree with you Jarrod and I like how the writers have kinda turned Ben from bad guy to good guy and now it seems Charles Widmore and his cronies are the ones to hate...These two guys are obsessed with this Island and it seems they will do anything to get back to it and own it in there own way and the flash forwards begin too reveal how everyone who has been to the island wants to get back there...I like how the action has picked up once again and I hope there are answers coming here soon as to what the smoke monster is and many other things that need explanations but if they don't come sooner than later, then I am fine with that, just make sure we get them...

The Shape of Things to Come was an A episode in my opinion. Great way to start the final run we are in for now. Ben is a frakkin bad ass but I don't believe one word that dude is says. I hope they finally explain the time travel/teleportation that is going on. Ben wakes up in the middle of the desert? He looked like he had clothes for the cold. Plus that Halliwax on him clearly points out to the Orchid video they showed this summer where it was our good friend Marvin Candle this time by the name of something Halliwax. In the video they showed the bunny appearing in another place out of the blue, or duplicating himself, don't remember which. Anyway, I wonder if Ben did the same thing to get to the desert. Sayid motivated by revenge transformation into Ben's assasin was pretty sweet. You don't frak with Sayid!! Lots of good stuff in this episode. Jack finally realizing Locke was right, the Smoke Monster that appears to be Ben's pet. The Widmore/Ben scene at the end. "I know who you are boy, what you are". Awesome. Can't wait for the rest of the season to play out, see how the 6 got off the island and hope we learn more from Jacob and that Richard the Immortal pops up again before the season ends. The Others need to step out of the Temple. I wanna know what rules were established by Ben & Widmore also. Anyway, A for this ep.

Absolute A+. Lost has finally gone completely sci-fi with the mysteries of the island and it's about time. My jaw was agape several times during this episode. Ben's daughter dying, the smoke monster in it's full kick ass glory, and Ben's evil little smile after he got Sayid to kill the first of Whitmore's men was priceless. This guy is an evil mastermind and no matter how much they try to portray him as having good intentions, he is going to evil until the bitter end. How much worse can he get than sacrificing his own daughter to the island? I'm doubting Rousseau is dead though. That was sadly a quick end to her if she did really die. I can't wait to see what Jack does now that he knows he was wrong. And I really can't wait to see what happens with Hurley to make him so sorry that he went with Locke. In all this episode was a great return after the short break and really shows that the creators are leading us somewhere great.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Ben's smile after recruiting Sayid! I had been convinced that Ben was going to use Michael to recruit Sayid, but the way the writers chose was far more fulfilling. Ben obviously played a significant role in killing Nadia, and upon further review Sayid did seem to trust Ben's info far too quickly given Sayid's comments and thoughts regarding Ben to date.---

I can't help but think we haven't seen the last of Rousseau either. Her death was anti-climactic for a rather important character, and I am waiting to see more of her backstory in a flashback. I imagine her tale of coming to the island could answer many questions regarding the origin of the Black Rock and the "sickness" (which I believe is the same condition Desmond had when his consciousness was jumping back and forth in time), and I think she'll really jump off the deep end after learning Alex is dead.---

Speaking of Alex's death, Ben's reaction to watching his daughter being executed was pitch perfect. I liked how he tried calling Keamy's bluff (and by extension Widmore's bluff), but it backfired in his face. I have to wonder if Ben's repeated use of lies and misdirection will change now that it cost him his daughter.---

Overall, I think "Shape of Things to Come" is the second best episode so far this season, second only to "The Constant." Easily an A.

What I want to know (and please if someone know, please tell me) is what happened to the body of Jack's father...where is it? If I recall correctly in the first fast forward episode Jack mentions that his father is upstair and check if he is more sober than Jack.
Is the father of Jack alive? How? Where is he? Is he Jacob? Did the writers forget about that storyline?

Jack's father is hanging out with Jacob at the Cabin. Christian Sheppard isn't Jacob, since Hurley saw both of them at the Cabin. They haven't said what happend to Christian's body or the 2 skeletons from season 1 either. Anyway, in season 3's finale, Jack mentions his father, but that was the alcohol speaking and the guilt from leaving the people on the island. Thinking back to last year's finale, I wonder if the Island won't let Jack kill himself like it did with Michael.

For one of the few times, I agree with your grade -- largely -- but not for your failure to explain why it's a B+ and not an A. The reason is that, while this is all exciting, it feels very forced -- as has the entire series -- with Ben able to predict nearly everyone's reactions, which makes things a bit convenient and silly.

It's a fun show, but nothing deep. It's obvious to me the Rousseau isn't dead at all. She was shot and will recover and seek revenge for Alex's death -- either from Ben or from the men who killed her, including Widmore.

The series has lost some of the subtlety -- when it was rarely there -- of Season One. Things feel very choppy and rushed, though I'm glad to be rid of Kate's love triangle.

I also liked the tension between Locke wanting to contact the island/Jacob and the others wanting to leave his mission; nice dynamic that complicates things.

Hurley saw them both at the cabin????????? I dont remember that....
