What They Say
Animation 'Love Hina' is on TV Tokyo Network. This is the Christmas special which was on the air on Dec. 24, 2000. It contains the episode from the special. A heart-squeezing love story. As a initial pressing special feature, it will come with a booklet, and will come housed in a clear case.

The Review!
Ah, that old chestnut Love Hina, I am grateful to the series for the main reason it got me into the romance/comedy genre. The story is that tried and tested formula of a nerdy boy who lands on his feet and ends up surrounded by beautiful women. This DVD picks up the story very late in the series, and it is of course recommended that you have seen the previous 24 episodes. For those not quite up on the episode structure it goes Episodes 1-24, Christmas Special, Spring Special then finally episode 25.

Audio
As with most series, the sound is presented in Dolby Digital Surround 2.0, and as you would expect there are no problems at all with the sound, both voices and music are clear at all time whether it be on its own or at the same time.

Video
Being a R2 of Japanese origin, the picture is perfect, colours are vibrant and artifacting is non-existent. At times the picture does look blurred and washed out, but this is intended and adds very well to the atmosphere of this episode and the situations that it occurs in.

Menus
I?ve only seen a couple of R2 disc menus and most have been very bare. This title is no exception but it doesn?t really matter as it does what it needs to. The DVD goes straight into the main feature instead of presenting you with the menu, not a major problem, but some people may not like it. When you call them menu up there are only three option, Chapters, Start and the Non-Credit Ending. The latter two take you straight to what it says. The chapter menu is based of two pages and has a total of 19 chapter stops, the thumbnails are static but written underneath is what it takes you to, and I believe (my Japanese isn?t as good as I would like) corresponds to the 13 page booklet that comes inside the case.

Packaging
Very nice! That?s all that you need to know really, this limited edition versions comes with a fancy white plastic case with a frosted, snowy like effect that lets certain parts of the main case show through. The cover is reversible (as with most Love Hina DVD?s) and has some nice art on the flip side as well as the original cover. The normal release of this DVD comes without the frosted case and the graffiti booklet.

Review
I?m not going into great detail here, if you are curious about this series, this is a great place to start, and a bad place to start. If you want to enjoy this series to the most, start at volume one, or you can begin here but have a majority of the story spoilt (plus you?ll miss out on lots of fun. If you are a fan of Love Hina then this DVD is a must buy. And be sure to check it out when the first volume of the series is released in February 2002.
