The Review!
Anime 18 dips their hands into the Milky label for this two OVA episode series which managed to surpass my minimal expectations. Maybe Milky can produce interesting shows on occasion.

For our primary viewing session, we listened to this disc in its original language of Japanese. It’s a nice standard stereo mix that provides clear dialogue with no dropouts. The music is the only thing that really utilizes the stereo channels well, with dialogue mostly through the center but sounding good.

Released in 2001, this transfer features very rich looking colors with very little in the way of problems. The first episode is the better of the two, with very little in the way of cross coloration except around some edges. The second episode has much more cross coloration and a few more visible jaggies along solid lines. Colors throughout both are pretty much the way most hentai looks today, which is very rich and vibrant looking. Other than the cross coloration, this is a great looking transfer.

The front cover is pretty amusing when you really take the time to look at it. While you’ve got the lead female character bound up, you realize it’s with a ribbon since it all ties in a nice bow. The chains in the background give a darker feel, but they’re not even in the show, nor are the handcuffs in the logo. The background is made up with images from the show done in a purple sheen, and in general it looks good. The back cover provides more of the images in the background as well as one piece of full color in the foreground. There’s a very brief summary and a good clear listing of the discs features and technical information. The reverse side of the cover, as this is a clear keepcase, is a black and white image of the two leads engaged in each other. One side provides the chapter listings while the other provides a bilingual cast list and overall production information.

The menu is an amusing little piece that again features our lead female but this time kneeling on the bed as the lights come up around the room. The menus are good here with quick load times and easy access to everything. Of course, I continue to dislike setting the language and having it dump me into the show. I’ll start the show when I want to start the show.

There’s a couple of good extras in here, something that’s usually skimpy in hentai releases. There’s a good two-minute video gallery that shows pieces from the show itself as well as a rare textless closing sequence.

Love Lessons is an entertaining little tale, one that without the actual explicit scenes you could see as being part of a traditional cop drama from the other side of the story. Things here focus on our lead male character, young Kusanagi. He’s had some problems with his debts to the yakuza, so one of them has decided to take him under his wing. He explains how the yakuza are just like regular businesses these days and have diversified. He’s recently come into possession of one particular business, one where Kusanagi would likely fit well and can work off his debt.

Meeting in an amusement part, Takamori introduces Kusanagi to the mature and sexy looking Sakura. She describes her business, where she procures very expensive clients with their particular tastes. These clients pay handsomely to get what they can’t get elsewhere or easily. It turns out that the job for Kusanagi is to take the women that he’s provided with and to train them to each clients specific requests, so that when the client gets them, they perform beyond the clients imagination. So he ends up being paid better for that, and so does Sakura and therefore Takamori.

With his nod, he’s brought into this small world where Sakura runs the training side of it out of her yacht. We get introduced to four clients and their special desires, which aren’t all that strange, and the women that are lined up for training. Each one takes a different amount of time and effort, and Kusanagi is set to go to work. We then follow him as he goes through dealing with the women and finding out about them (they’re often paying off debts of their own) and getting them to do what he needs them to do, so he can pay off his debts.

With no demons or tentacles and hardly any non-consensual scenes here, this proved to be a more enjoyable show than some others we’ve seen in the past couple of months. The character designs and animation were also a big plus, particularly since there were no really young looking characters here. Add in that the fetishes aren’t, well, scary, and it was a pleasant way to pass an hour late into the evening. There’s plenty of time actually spent on the plot, and while there’s no real conclusion, there’s room for more. And I find myself interested in seeing more.

Love Lessons isn’t going to take hentai fans by storm, but it may be a decent couples show or a good entry level hentai to dip into. Good production values, decent plot and fairly inoffensive.
