As STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES is prepped for its May 16 release, the official STAR WARS website has announced a changed in accepted mythology going back to RETURN OF THE JEDI. Namely, Obi-Wan Kenobi is not the brother of moisture farmer Owen Lars.
The connection, which has been a cute fact for fans to throw around and not much more, was originally made official in the first Lucasfilm approved GUIDE TO THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE, first published in the early 1980s. Well, it seems George Lucas has changed his mind.
In response to a question to the Jedi Council asking if Obi-Wan and onetime Luke Skywalker caretaker Lars were brothers, the WARS website has announced, "No. The two are from separate families with no connection through blood. Although a number of spin-off materials were published in 1983 and in subsequent years stating that the two characters were related, those materials were based on outdated and eventually discarded information."
Lars makes his first appearance in the prequels in EPISODE II.
