Variety has confirmed a report from Latino Review saying that Maggie Gyllenhaal is in final negotiations to join the cast of The Dark Knight.

She will reportedly play Assistant DA Rachel Dawes, the role vacated by Katie Holmes.

Christopher Nolan plans to start production in the late Spring or early Summer or a Summer 2008 release.

KJ's Take:  Friggin NICE!@  I love Maggie, she's a god damn amazing actress and makes for one hell of a casting choice.  See ya later Holmes, don't let the door hit ya ...

yes, yes, yes... i love her, and she is a great actress.. to me the only weak point of batman begins was kaite holmes lame acting, so now im happier with this new cast

I can't bust on Katie because I'm a fan, but I do believe Maggie is a better actress and will bring more nuances to the character. I can't wait to see this film!

I am in agreement! This is wonderful news!

Maggie even bears a slight resemblance to Katie in that photo... I'm game. Bring on the Dark Knight!

Man, this character must play an important role for them to go through all this trouble to replace her.... love Gyllenhaal though

This is great news. I thought she was terrific in "Stranger than Fiction."

It's also nice to see that they haven't abandoned the character. It only makes sense to have the character around since she is the Assistant DA and Harvey Dent is of course the DA. It'll be easier to believe Maggie as an Assistant DA. Holmes as the Assistant DA always struck me as about as credible as Denise Richards playing a nuclear physicist.

I think Maggie G. is prettier than Katie Holmes.

I've been a fan of hers since Donnie Darko. She'll hopefully put some life in the lame charcter.

It's a shame Katie Holmes chose not to return. Bad career move on her part. She'll be missed, but Gyllenhaal is an excellent replacement.

There is some rumor floating on the net that Cruise didn't want Katie to return because there was going to be a love scene with Bale in the next film. I doubt that's true. Everyone likes to bash Tom for his beliefs but they seem to have served him well. I don't know why Holmes won't be in it but Maggie is indeed an excellent choice (I do think Katie is cuter, though).
