The Geek Files blog for the online edition of the UK tabloid Coventry Telegraph has the scoop on the planned 'X-Men Origins: Magneto' film. Their info comes from Production Weekly bulletin, which routinely publishes studio synopses for upcoming film productions.

Here's what Production Weekly said about the 20th Century Fox film:

The original X-Men film began with a prologue that showed the character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years.

The storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realisation that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.

Fox has been talking about a Magneto spin-off movie for over four years now. Back in April of last year, 'Dark Knight and 'Blade' guru David S. Goyer became attached to direct the film. However, Fox is likely waiting to see how 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' does before rushing into anything.

it'll be a great movie if directed with care and pride for the character...

As with the XMEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE movie, I am anxious to see this one as well. I've loved reading Marvel comics when I was a kid and I still love the Marvel universe. This movie will not only allow us to see and understand why Magneto hates all homosapiens but why the rivalry between he and Xavier came about.

That's the most unstartling reveal since Sulu came out of the closet.

Yes, that drescription basically said the new Magneto movie will be about Magneto.  Shocking!

I've always hated the X franchise. No offence McKellen fans, but I have always though Rutger Hauer would have been a better Magneto. I hope this supposed movie, will have a totally different feel.

This has "BAD IDEA" written all over it! Why would anyone want to watch an enitre movie about Magneto before he became Magneto? I didn't care about Darth Vader before he bacame Darth Vadar, but Lucas shoved those movies down our throats, instead of just starting from after the last movie ended! This idea should be scrapped!

Because Magneto is the greatest vilian in comics.

I have to agree with almostunbiased.  Magneto is a fantastic character because it isn't hard to see his point-of-view.  If he didn't kill so many people, he might just be considered a mutant revolutionary... but it's easy to see where that anger comes from and it's almost as easy to side with him.  Wolverine is a killer but we all love him 'cause he supposedly kills people for the right reasons and he acts cool.  Honestly, he's just a dick who can't control his temper.  Magneto at least has some sense of nobility to him.  But that's a rant for another time...

If done well, this could be a great movie.  I don't have high hopes though.

I also have to agree that this supposed "reveal" didn't reveal anything.  What the hell, Rob?  This is old news that's been reported since the day this movie was announced.  (sorry man, you know I love ya, but I gotta bust yer balls on this one)

Also, I think Terrance Stamp would've made a sweet Magneto.  No offense to Ian McKellan; he's a great actor, but he doesn't have the physical presence that Magneto should have.

Dazzler 11/13/2008 4:31:15 AM

I don't see why Wolverine has to suceed before a Magneto flies?  All comic movies are hot properties right now.  But I would still keep the budget low and focus on story with this one.
