According to Sci Fi Wire, Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst may be warming toward doing another sequel to the Spider-Man franchise.

"It's possible that we make another movie," said Maguire.  "It all depends on if there's a story worth telling. I feel very proud of the three movies that we've made. I feel like the stories all deserve to be told, and, you know, if they come up with a good movie, and the whole team wants to get back together, and we feel like we can make a good movie that's worth making, then I'm up for it."

Dunst has also gone on record saying: "I would work with Sam on any movie he wanted to work on it with me, because I just adore that man."

Both had previously stated they weren't interested in returning.

That's great news. I like Jake Gyllenhaal and all, but I just can't see him replacing Toby Maguire as Peter Parker or Spider-Man.

Personally I want to thank Mania for the spate of recent cheesecake photos starting with Grace Park weeks ago. Kirsten has never looked finer...except in a wet shirt kissing Spiderman...

They'll pay em, and they'll take it... but I see Tobey more than Dunst

They may not be entirely interested in returning to the role but at least they're keeping their options open. That's cool with me.

With the insane amount of money this franchise makes, a 4th movie is GUARANTEED (you heard it here first). Sony would get a new director and cast if needed. Superhero movies have that interchangability. The costume IS the draw, not necessarily who is under the mask. See Prowse and Christensen.

There will be a fourth movie, with the same cast and director. There are still plenty of great stories to tell and plenty of money to throw at Sam, Toby and Kirsten. The big three of the franchise will each do a movie before beginning SM4 which will come out in 2010. I think Sam visualized a trilogy (Peter's journey being the underlining storyarc), but I think he'll do one more with Lizard and Mysterio or Electro.

I would have no problem with recasting the leads, because originaldave77 is right; it's the costume and characters that are the draw, not the actors. The director is key, because Sam has so much passion for the characters and respect for the history.

This is good news but not entirely surprising. These films are still in their prime and it would be dumb to stop making them when there is still so much great material to call upon. Hope to see Carnage in the fourth. As far as thinking Kirsten couldn't be finer in that photo, then you haven't seen her fug pictures on wwtdd.com He always rips her a new one. It's hilarious.

wes, dave, I'm not sure I completely agree that the costume is the draw. SM is a tragic and comic character. The battles against supervillians don't stand against Peter's struggles against the world. There's your draw. Another actor may make it work, but unlike Bats or Supes, Spidey is very dependent on who is under the mask. Recasting him will be as challenging as recasting Bond.
Let's hope this news implies no such recasting will be needed, and the point will be moot...
