It looks like Sony's decision to take a mini-break and not jump immediately back into pre-production for Spider-Man 4 right after the third installment has paid off. Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that leading star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi have signed on to return in the fourth installment of the franchise. For Sony's part, they have frequently denied rreports these past few months that a new director and new cast was being introduced, despite the many rumors appearing around the internet this summer.
The site reports the star and director have signed on the dotted line but there is no word yet if Kirsten Dunst is signed yet. That doesn't mean she's getting recast as the character of Mary Jane Watson is expected to appear and the studio has said they will not recast her.
Screenwriter James Vanderbilt is writing the script, with plans to shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 back-to-back but the studio is hesitant on that strategy.
"The studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'"
Who's playing the villain? That part isn't sure yet but the site says that principal photography doesn't start until the fall of 2009, we will find out who the villain we'll know who is playing it. That indicates a previous casted part in the first three installments leading a lot of us to believe the role of Dr. Connors aka a possible Lizard.
When the studios confirm DHD's report, we'll update this.
Spider-Man 4 is expected to hit theaters May 2011.

I was hoping for a complete recast but I can live with the original cast coming back for the next 2. And I'm really hoping Raimi puts out a better film this time around. They've gotten progressively worse as the series went on.
