Jon Favreau, director of IRON MAN, confirmed at the Comic Con that the villain in the upcoming film would be Mandarin.

The Mandarin was a Marvel Comics supervillain, a scientific genius who sought world domination. Mandarin had no superpowers, but was a superb athlete and had tremendous martial arts skills. He uses ten rings which respond to his mental commands as weapons.

In IRON MAN, troubled billionaire Tony Stark creates a life support suit to assist him after a life threatening accident. He ultimately decides to use its technology to fight evil and crime.

"The suit will be more like a weapons platform than a flying suit more of a War Machine-feel to it," said Favreau at the Comic Con.

IRON MAN hits theaters on May 2, 2008.

On the one hand, I'm glad they've named an actual villian, because early indications seemed like he was going to be fighting the evil Alcohol for the whole movie. On the other hand... Mandarin? Couldn't they have found a little more imposing villian?

How about Ozzy .... Iron Man would be a foot note if not for Ozzy and Black Sabath making him a real Icon . I never heard of Iron Man until I was 13 and was handed my first Sabbath album!! I relize this casting will never happen. But Favs really needs to find a place for the song that saved Iron Man from the scrap heep!!

The thing about this news that bothers me is not Mandarin, it is the quote about the suit having more of a war machine feel. HELLO! there is a reason why War Machine is the cheap second tier Ironman. I don not want to see a bulky walking tank, I want to see a sleek fast moving, agile modern Ironman. If you make captain America, you don't give him a US Agent feel, If you make Thor you don't give him a Thunderstrike feel, If you make Superman you don't give him a pussy Superboy feel (oh wait, they already did that). WEST COAST AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!

I loved Iron Man. I have this horrible feeling they will ruin it for me.

I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure "Iron Man' the Black Sabbath song is not related in any way to the Iron Man comic, with the except of sharing the same name. The song "Iron Man" is about a guy who travels to the future and sees the end of the world, but as he travels back to his own time, his body turns to iron, and then he goes crazy and brings about the end of the world he had just seen. Right?

Ok maybe so but you guys missed the point I never heard of the comic until I heard the song many peolpe were exposed to Iron Man this way!! Like it or not that song is married to the history of Iron MaN!! I bought my first Iron Man comic a week after I was given The Sabbath Album.. Sometimes pop culture has odd ways of feeding off eachother! Hey Ponyboy if you think this was funny check out my views on this weeks box-office please excuse the spelling I couldnt think to clearly been up drinking with Oz all weekend

I'm afraid this is a bad choice. I have no problem with the "War Machine" feel to the armor as it may play better on the big screen, but I think Mandarin is the wrong villian for this movie. I'm sure they will try to adapt it to be a little more palatable to mainstream moviegoers, but will probably wind up being cheesy.

Crap, the suit is going to have a "War Machine" feel to it...and I was so hoping for the suit from Michelinie, Bright, and Layton's early work on the title. Oh well.

Seen Ironman already: Robocop. They both don't fly.

Mandarin? Ehh...could be worse. Fin Fang Foom anyone? As for the War Machine understandable. Marvel/Favreau wants to do an origin of him and that makes sense. They can't just go "tada!!! here's the Iron Man we know in love but with no explanation". Lame. Think of Batman Begins with Bale finding his weapons and assorting them. The classic scene of him breaking the helmets or riding around in the would be batmobile. Thats what they're hoping for with Iron Man. They need to crawl before they fly and shoot repulsor beams.
