Manga Review: Flight, Volume Five

Everyone can benefit from an occasional comic infusion. On a rainy day or at the end of a stressful workweek, there's something to be said for hefting a chunky collection of beautiful comics and getting lost in the visions of a large stable of artists. The Flight collections have long been admired as high-quality showcases for upcoming talent. Volume five continues the tradition, its stories emphasizing the need for childlike imagination and fantastic friends, regardless of age.

Volume five of Flight clocks in with over 20 contributors, including Scott Campbell, Svetlana Chmakova and Ryan North of dinosaurcomics.com. The comics within explore everything from the sudden elimination of Earth's gravity to the difficulties of being the heiress of Pluto on an Earth that's ceased caring for the tiny planet.

The diversity of Flight's artists always makes for a great collection of stories. Some, like Chris Appelhans' “Seasons”, feature simplistic drawings that are nonetheless compelling through their characters and their characters' actions: Appelhans' stories feature “Frank and Frank,” a boy and his lumbering bipedal bear friend who play together with silent but passionate energy. Other stories, such as “Voyage” by Kness and Made, go for rich colours and detail. Every artist offers something that's just downright likable, whether its through their art, witty dialogue or a confident reliance on body language to tell their story.

Anyone who's collected Flight up until volume four has no reason to stop now: each collection has brought its own unique charm thanks in part to a lack of a solid, shared theme. Each artist is allowed to go crazy with what they have. It works well, and the end product feels light and airy but far from scattered.

Readers new to Flight can feel confident about jumping in anywhere, anytime. The anthology is as friendly and alluring as any veteran storyteller.
