Mania Box Office Report: Ass Kicked

Kick-Ass 2 falls and falls hard

Will Kick-Ass spawn another sequel?

Well a superhero movie fell to a movie about a butler, marking the end of the summer. Lee Daniel’s The Butler took the number one spot last weekend where the sequel to Kick-Ass arrived at number four.
Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report: “2010's Kick-Ass may have built a following on home video, but that didn't translate in to stronger attendance for the sequel. To the contrary, Kick-Ass 2 only opened to $13.57 million, which is way below the first movie's $19.8 million debut. It's also only a bit ahead of fellow Universal Pictures comic book adaptation R.I.P.D., which bombed earlier this Summer with $12.7 million”.
It looks as if the Mark Millar project may have seen its last big screen incarnation. Then again, we thought that the last time as well. Only time will tell.

The Smurfs 2
The Wolverine

This weekend we can say that the fall has begun with the horror/ sci-fi/ comedy The World’s End arriving in theaters. Who else is in for another trip with Edgar Wright and his boys?

I haven't seen Kick-Ass 2, but I don't see how it can be close to a bomb.  It's made about half its budget in the opening weekend.  Elysium has made half its budget in two weekends.  How long has The Wolverine been out and it's just now breaking even?  It seems like people are saving their cash for one or two movies they really want to see and passing up on others they do want to see but are willing to wait on.  Half the budget the first weekend may be a sign of a pretty good opening moving forward.

Caught up on Elysium and Woverine this weekend.  Wolverine's story was okay, I didn't see any 200 mill worth of special effects in it.  As a matter of fact I thought it had less action than any Xmen film to date.  Elysium was good, but the story was a little simple, and the characters a little over the top.

I saw Kick-Ass 2 over the weekend, and I thought it was pretty good. It wasn't as great as the original, but it was a very good sequel. I think the over the top violence and Carrey's refusal to do press for the film (as well as his comments about the material - said after he collected his check!) might have played a part in it not performing well.

@Sanity - I agree with your comments on Wolverine, I didn't see a lot of action or special effects money in that, but I did enjoy it a lot (much much better than the first one).  And I thought Elysium was good, but I think  I was expecting an epic film from Blomkampt. I think the film would have been better if Damon had played the Bad Guy and Shartlo Copely had played the good guy.

I've been holding off for this weekend.  The World's End and You're Next are both movies I plan to see in theaters.

Elysium will pick up steam as the unwashed masses of the world revel in a defeated USA populated by angry jealous people.

BTW: Saw Elysium last night. Was able to see past the obvious politics and focus on the action. It was as ztigr said though. Over the top charcaters... And a lot of over acting.. And quite a bit of under acting by my dear Jodie Foster. :( It was like she phoned this one in). What was up with the ADR team on this film?! My boss would have fired me and then probably sued me for doing such shoddy work!

I really enjoyed the sequel and don't really understand the critics problem with this film. The idea that this film is insanely violent is complete bs....all of the violence is really tongue in cheek.  It's almost as if there is some witch hunt against Mark Millar or the film itself.  How else do you account for sites like boxofficeprophets saying stuff like "the sequel that nobody wanted".  There have been far more violent movies that have been praised and the gross out humor consisted of one scene.  It's ridiculous.

Also, comparing R.I.P.D to kick ass is ridiculous, as kick ass didn't have half the budget of that film.  It will make it's money back after the domestic run and foreign box office...R.I.P.D may not ever make it's budget back.

I finally saw The Wolverine and Pacific Rim this weekend.

The Woverine was good. Felt it was more grounded after the earth shattering action from MoS and Avengers. It was nice to have a more heart felt story.

Pacific Rim was good but did not live up to my expectations.

When you consider the fact that Kick Ass 2 is a comic book movie which kids under the age of 17 (including Chloe Moretz who's 16), can't see unless accompanied by a parent or adult did quite well at the box office.

Robert Trate... should KA2 be called a Super Hero Movie or a Spoof of Super Hero Movies ?  The R.I. P. D. dudes, Percy Jackson and Damon in Elysium all had more extraordinary powers (and gadgets) than the Kick Ass Heroes & Heroine.

Dudes- World's End is frakking aces. I'm seeing it again as part of the Cornetto Trilogy on Thursday. CAN NOT WAIT!
