Mania Box Office Report: The Avengers Fall

Not to worry, they will rise again

Despite a weekend that obviously includes one more day in its totals, a champion has already been declared. If you can believe it, The Avengers have finally fallen. Here is the official report from Box Office Mojo.

“It's not a great start, but MIB 3 got the job done by finally dethroning mega-blockbuster The Avengers over Memorial Day weekend. Chernobyl Diaries also opened, though it barely made a blip on the radar, while Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom had one of the best limited debuts ever. For the three-day weekend the Top 12 earned an estimated $147.5 million, which is off 32 percent from last year when The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 ruled.

MIB 3 opened to an estimated $55 million this weekend, which is Will Smith's third-highest Friday-Sunday debut ever behind I Am Legend ($77.2 million) and Hancock ($62.6 million). That's not really an apples-to-apples statistic, though, given how many of Mr. Smith's bigger movies didn't opened on Friday. For example, Men in Black II opened on a Wednesday and earned $54.9 million through its first three days in theaters. Adjusting for 10 years of ticket price inflation and 3D ticket prices, MIB 3's initial attendance was significantly lower than that of Men in Black II.

That being said, the fact that MIB 3 was about on par with Men in Black II from a revenue perspective is somewhat admirable considering it hit theaters nearly 10 years after that very poorly received second entry (5.8 rating on IMDb) sullied the franchise's reputation. The marketing campaign was fairly effective in conveying that the Men in Black are back with a plot that retains the light-hearted vibe of the original movies while adding a new twist to the mix with time travel. The real credit, though, belongs to star Will Smith—his three-year hiatus may have lost him a few fans, but this opening is solid enough to suggest that his box office drawing power isn't too diminished.

Sony is reporting that the audience was 54 percent male and 56 percent over the age of 25, which indicates that families were probably not a huge contributor. The movie received a solid "B+" CinemaScore, which improved to an "A-" among moviegoers under the age of 18.

While it had to settle for second place, The Avengers was still very impressive this weekend. The superhero team-up eased 34 percent to an estimated $37 million, which is the second-highest fourth weekend ever behind Avatar's $50.3 million. On Saturday, the movie set a new record by crossing the $500 million mark in just 23 days. Through Sunday, The Avengers has earned $513.7 million, and will pass The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) by Friday to move in to third place on the all-time domestic chart”. -Box Office Mojo

Now the waiting game has begun. Will The Dark Knight Rises break any of The Avengers records? What will The Amazing Spider-Man do? Will the success of MIB III mean MIB IV? Keep checking in with Mania for all the latest genre news, reviews, and events.

So what are the first week in June’s genre pics? Well you can watch the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) battle it out with the queen of the tween movies (Kristen Stewart). Or you can watch the big bobbie horror fest Piranha 3DD. Is your choice obvious or hard?

I saw MIB3 and it was a really fun film.  Go see it if you haven't yet.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is doing great numbers considering it's in 1/3 of the number of theateres of the other movies out there.  Anybody know anything about it?

Looks like I'm going to have to see Chernobyl Diaries this week if I'm going to be able to see it at all.  I expected it to fare better.  I was wondering if The Avengers was going to be able to beat The Dark Knight in the Domestic Box Office.  I wasn't entirely sure they were going to pull it off at all, much less by the end of the week.  At the rate the film is going, not even a re-release of The Dark Knight the day before TDKR is released will help them retake third place.

Think I'm going to go check out MiB tomorrow. Looks like fun.

Kind of figured Avengers would lose top spot. I'll bet the studio is all upset about it... :)

And I'll just go ahead and say this (and I expect to get roasted by most of the Maniacs for it). But the girl in the Piranha 3DD still is hot, but I bet she looks funny wearing street clothes. Not that I'd complain if she was my girlfriend, but sometimes there is such as thing as 'too much of a good thing'. I see back problems in her future...

Saw Marigold Hotel.... excellent Karas1, worth the money. Fine performances (just look at the cast) and a good story.

MiB 3 was cool and I'm not a fan of the franchise.  Also, the Pitbull song was balls the first time I heard but after hearing it a million times I don't mind it anymore.  Id watch MiB 4 if the made it,  oh and the SpiderMan footage was amazing but I only saw the leaked version.  Read the 3d was really good.

Cant wait for Snow White next week.  HBO has a 1st look if anyone is interested.

I also saw MIB3 last weekend - had to watch it in 3D as well (stupid scheduling).

It was fun and action packed. There was a tear jerker of a sub plot in it and it was well handled. The Griffin character was all YODA like - watch this movie, Maniacs! 4/5

I had no doubts Avengers would make tonnes of cash and easily take 3rd spot in the US BO all time. (As has been pointed out, DK was released in 2008 and not in 3D) I even thought it might take the top spot world wide but it lacks the "star wars" (just that extra) quality. However, Avatar also was a bit lacking in plot and dept but it still took top spot so ... *shrugs*

Anyway the last I checked box office mojo - its going to take over Potter as 3rd world wide BO holder.

Wiseguy 5/28/2012 7:21:08 AM

Didn't I say it would displace 4 eyes? Avengers baby. I also said MiB would dis[place it. I  think the Avengers would've done even better numbers had Dark Shadows not basically cut in half the amount of I-Max screenings and removed from most for MiB.

Not catching anything this weekend. Can't wait for Snow White next week, maybe I'll double it up and catch MiB3 next weekend too. Just not that interested in MiB anymore besides by hanso's description of the 6 minute preview of Spidey  it sounds like the stuff I saw about 3 months back when they had that special limited sneak look

And let's stop crying over 3D already. All you bitches didn't bring up I-Max when TDK was breaking records and no one is saying it now when they're getting a 2 month run on the screens. When TDK came out no one was talking inflation or any of the smae bitch ass excuses you use now for the Avengers. Movie tickets keep going up, 3D is part of the landscape and so is I-Max so please STFU about it already or don't but it's a played out excuse, records are meant to be broken and they'll continue to do so as prices keep going up

I'm impressed The Avengers are almost certianly going to break 600 million. and over take Titanic's orginal box office run.

I wish I could be more interested in the Snow White film

redvector 5/28/2012 8:34:47 AM

Considering MIB3's overblown $375 mil budget not including marketing it will have to make Avengers level money to not be considered a flop by the suits at Sony.

GothicStorm 5/28/2012 10:19:00 AM

Dumb question time. Are the number of theaters also the number of SCREENS the movie is showing on? I'm surprised at the number of theaters showing Avengers compared to the number showing MIB 3, (why would ANY theater drop Avengers so quickly?) unless we're talking screens... That number seems a bit low for all the movies if we're talking screens though.

Anyway, I'm not surprised at all by MIB 3 over-taking Avengers. Like Avengers, MIB 3 is a good family movie and it's a fun little franchise that's a common household name. Still Avengers will take the #1 spot before all is said and done. I went and saw The Lorax with my kids at the dollar theater and poked my head into John Carter...empty. Nope no surprise there either.
