haha ... yes where is CrazyCEO when you need him? ... defending the integrity of DK is his job!

I'm not a big fan of the Nolan TDK Bat franchise but I was one of those skeptics that Avengers would not beat Bats. I predicted it wouldn't beat TDK ( I was wrong) or TDKR. I honestly did not expect super huge success like this but this is what happens when you have a good summer movie. 93% rating means the majority of critics are liking it. Filmscore has it A and everyone I spoke to that have seen Avengers loved it, even non comic fans. The strong word of mouth is contributing to its success.

As for predicting TDKR will beat Avengers? I don't know anymore. It has a strong fanbase and is following up to a massive hit but there are so many factors that are against it. No Joker, buzz of Heath's death, negativity towards Bane as a villain and Hathaway as Catwoman, the 3rd movie of a trilogy curse, follow-up to one (Avengers) maybe two (Spidey) huge hits, etc...

Going back to John Carter. It's too bad this movie didn't get the break it needed. I liked it. Our local drive-in (the only one left here) had a double bill of Avengers and John Carter. It was so tempting. Oh well, just pre-ordered my blu-ray. :)

Had a video blog on Yahoo from the editor of rottentomatoes he predicts it will be avengers, TDKR, then Spider-Man in that order. His thoughts about the summer movie crop are interesting. He said Universal will get a management shake-up after Battleship, they have had a couple of bad years appearently.

The numbers for the TDK were inflated by heath's Death, And Heath's performace. The movie it self wasn't that great it was good, but without Heath dying it would not have broken 500. And honestly I would be happy to see it give that record up to have Heath alive and well.

The Avengers is the convergances of Iron Man 1&2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captian America. It's 4 years in the making, and it has just about everything you need to make it work. There are some weak points, but I don't think anything like this has ever been attempted in cinema before.

When the Dark Knight broke 1b world wide it was only the 3rd Movie in History to do so. (Titanic and ROTK) Since then through re-releases and wider internation releases (I think) several more have. (12 in total now)

Avengers is the first movie with a tradition Box Office run to make these kinds of numbers (ie Titanic and Avatar that had small - average numbers consistantly week to week for months)

Avengers is on pace to hit 600m by it's 9th or 10th week. ... (if it keeps a similar decline to TDK, Hunger Games etc.) and is currently sitting at  a Domestic Box Office nearly equal to where the TDK was before it had it's first theatre bumb.

In fact it took TDK 71 days to break 523 Million, Avengers did it in 25. Hell Avatar took 36.

Sadly The Avengers didn't do as well oversea, and isn't going to have the longevity of Avatar or Titanic, as such it won't catch Avatar, and Titanics current re-release numbers will keep it out of range most likely as well.

Avengers will though, be the 3rd move to break 600m domestically.

I don't think TDKR will match any of the records set by Avengers ... apart from the reasons given, it just doesn't have the wider appeal that avengers has ...

If CrazyCEO was around, I'd have bet $100 with him ... :)

i watched MIB3 this weekend and it was o.k .  the new snow white movie will keep MIB3 from getting the numbers the studio is hoping for.. and by then i hope to hear that Avengers will beat titanic's record i hope. some people keep bashing john carter i have no idea why, it was a good film. i just think that lot's of people have never heard of this john carter book and that it's almost 100 year's old. when you watch the film you can see how it has inspired so many other superhero type book's that are now comic to film. though to bad for john careter movie it is what it is .. and there to the mix Battleship was not so bad, it was a fun no brainer movie, it's made their money and still counting at the end i don't think it gained or lost..     @WiseGuy i hear you man, people need to get over the 3D shit and move on. again MIB3 it just didn't wow me or my kid's, i think after having watched the Avengers the bar has gone waaaaaay up.  with MIB3 i kinda  was wishing it had more than what it was, not bashing it just don't think i would watch it twice at least not now untill it comes out on DVD, the next movie i want to see is PROMETHEUS. i hope it lives up to the hype....

I agree. The exec who greenlit Battleship should be fired. The moment I saw the trailer, and pretty much everyone in the audience, had a good chuckle when the title of the movie showed up at the end. In other words...this was a big joke.

I read somewhere Peter Berg wanted an actual movie on naval battles and I'm guessing a Jon Peters type of executive said "hey...Transformers and alien invasions are cool...let's add that to it". Fail!

Wiseguy 5/29/2012 6:40:05 AM

See I had similar feelings to you ElBaz. I predicted it would open bigger than Hunger Games but the legs The Avengers have shown despite other hyped wide release competition is really what surprised me.

Anyway I never said it would beat TDK but do and did expect it to beat TDKR mostly because I don't think it will duplicate TDK's performance for most of the aforementioned reasons

I also predicted Spidey would beat TDKR worldwide. Guess we'll see. We know Nolan has a big fanbase but will the other folk, the ones that no one expected to show up for TDK show up again?

Saw Marigold Hotel today.  It's a great feel-good film.  I reccomend it despite it's total lack of explosions, aliens or super heros.

Still pretty depressed by this news (lol, j/k) but does anyone have the final memorial day weekend #'s?
