Mania Box Office Report: Gravity Rises

A Damn Good Movie

By Robert T. Trate     October 06, 2013

Biggest opening weekend for Sandra Bullock

Gravity should be with us for a while. It is already the biggest opening weekend for both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Yes, that even includes Clooney’s Batman and RobinI honestly believe that Machete Kills will barely make a dent in Gravity’s Box Office take next weekend. Why? Word of mouth. Gravity is a damn good movie, a rarity, and everyone on Monday will walk into work and talk about it. So why did Warner Brothers push this film harder than any other this season?

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo has the reasons why Gravity had a big opening weekend: “Recognizing that Gravity had huge commercial potential, Warner Bros. rolled out a blockbuster-level marketing effort in the past month. Advertisements played up the movie's unique setting and stunning visuals, and also positioned it as a thrilling, action-packed adventure. Leading up to the release, Warner Bros. started emphasizing the movie's critical reception, which was nothing short of fantastic (it currently has a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Also, Sandra Bullock was all over the place promoting the movie, which helped bring in more women than may otherwise have attended an action-packed sci-fi movie (46 percent of the audience was female).

Machete does not fight gravity..gravity fights Machete.

No way I am going to see an oscar bait movie with Clooney.  I bet it's still a boring movie.  Machete takes my money.  Really he comes and takes my money!

Gravity was amazing.  That's the best way to put it, amazing.  Stunning visual effects and supurb acting.

Dazzler..........everyone has an opinion, but they'd have to pay me to see a shit movie with Charlie Sheen in it over this movie.  You may not like Clooney, but this movie was fantastic.

Machete will barely make a dent because it will probably suck balls.

Gravity was awesome, glad its making money.  Cuaron is boss.

We really needed a Machete sequel like we needed...

Actually. We didn't need it.

@ Dazzler, I'm in a headache mode right now, and you've posted now on the Gravity review itself, and the box office report page how you're not going to see the film because it's 'oscar bait'.

So you've posted in two places with articles about how the film is a critical/box office success, but how you have no interest in it. Seems like you're being redundant and really not doing anything other than making a lot of noise.

You're in the Mania minority when we're all having an across the board consensus that it's an amazing film. Maybe you should stop shouting to the movie heavens how you're not going to see it, and just shut up and not see it instead of letting us all know what you aren't going to do.

No one is dazzled by someone who needs to keep hammering home what they have no interest in.

End of headache rant.

I'm one the biggest Clooney haters out there but don't let your hate or dislike for the man stop you from seeing this movie.  If it helps, Clooney is in a supporting role, it's really a Sandra Bullock movie though the star of the movie is the movie itself and the director, Alfonso Cuaron.  This guy is a great director and I wish he would make more movies...hopefully he will now.  It's going to go down as a classic in the likes of 2001 and is meant to be seen on the big screen.  No matter how big your TV is it won't do it justice.  Lots of awards and nominations coming to this movie.

I want to see Gravity real bad, but I just had major, abdominal surgery and it's painful and hard to get around. But, from what I've been hearing and reading about this film I'll have to pop a couple "extra" norcos and make the effort to go see it!!!

Machete over Gravity? Now I know how the Twilight movies raked in so much cash.
