Mania Box Office Report: Guardians Back on Top

We Are Groot!

It debuted at number one, Guardians of the Galaxy. In its second week, it took a back seat to Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now Guardians of the Galaxy has emerged back on top, at number one. Not only did the Guardians slam the heroes in a half shell back into the their shells; the Guardians surpassed Bay’s fourth Transformer movie to be the highest grossing film of the summer. Not bad for a movie that features a talking a raccoon and tree.

How does Guardians measure up against the other big Marvel movie this year? Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report: Guardians of the Galaxy eased 30 percent to $17.6 million. It has now earned over $251 million, and by Friday it will pass fellow Marvel movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.8 million) to become the top grosser of the year. It also now seems likely thatGuardians will end its run with over $300 million”.

Will Marvel be able to duplicate the formula for The Inhumans? Does Warner Brothers and DC Comics even stand a chance?

I wanna know what the budget was for Sin City.  Whatever it was, 6 mil has got to hurt.

GOTG almost cought up with the new Godzilla movie,  j.k no but really almost lol.

therockdltj 8/24/2014 9:07:23 PM

GOTG has made  251 Million compared to Godzilla making 200 Million! GOTG hasn't released in China yet so WW #s will be going up by at least 80 Million when it does!

Read where sin city is down 78% from the opening of the first one. Yikes.

Sin City 2 was worth seeing, a real comic movie for the summer really.  But they did not do a good job expanding the movie.  Lots of pointless stuff going on in the movie.  Not sure if a true adaption or not from the book sequel since I did not read it but it did not progress the way it should have.

Incredible how much success GotG had in late summer. August movies usually don't make that much coin so I have to give credit to the Disney marketing machine to get everyone on board for this one.

Went to see Sin City last night................where to begin......................if you want to see Eva Green nude for an hour or so then go see it, otherwise avoid it.  You know how when your watching a long movie and it FEELS like a long movie, that is how i felt last night.  Kept looking at my watch.  I can't believe this movie did worse than Expendables 3, LOL !!

Looking forward to The November Man next week.

Looks like Marvel's found a bankable replacement for Iron Man in the MCU rotation.

monkeyfoot 8/25/2014 6:35:03 AM

SC2's bad box office can't be blamed on a stolen video version online like Expendables 3. The public seems to have said that either the original idea was interesting enough but they don't need to see it again or it has been way too long to latch onto the interest the first one caused.

Wiseguy 8/25/2014 6:53:30 AM

I called GOTG regaining the top spot last weekend.....guess I was a week off.

By next weekend it should be the #1 movie of the year at least until either Interstellar or The Hunger Games I'd guess. I don't think anyone called that

The Marvel fanbase is strong and growing
