Mania Box Office Report: Guardians Score 2nd Best Weekend

Turtle Power Takes #1

The good news is that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy scored the best second weekend of the summer. Hollywood is thrilled as this will be a billion dollar August for them. The first of its kind. We still have the third Expendables and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For to add to that pot.

I had a lot of people ask me if I was going to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this weekend, or had I seen yet. I am not a Michael Bay fan, nor do I have a fondness/ nostalgia for the Turtles, and if I want to see Megan Fox a quick google search would be good enough. However, these were the reasons why many people were going to see TMNT. Outside of the Google search, the Turtles' cartoons are everywhere, we just got enough Michael Bay action with the latest Transformers and Disney XD was running the original Turtles movies all weekend. I guess Bay’s Turtle movie is for the masses.

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report on why TMNT took the weekend. "This strong opening can be attributed primarily to the power of the Ninja Turtles brand. Older moviegoers (over 25, at least), have a fondness for the Turtles of the 80s and 90s, while children have formed a connection with the Turtles via the recent (and very popular) Nickelodeon animated show. This new version managed to align nicely with the existing brand, while also creating something visually distinct from its predecessors (primarily with the CGI turtles and Michael Bay style action). As a result, it drew strong interest from moviegoers young and old: according to Paramount, the audience was 55 percent over the age of 25”.

Not surprised TMNT won but I thought the race would be a lot closer. Just wasn't feeling TMNT and really didn't seem like the buzz was that strong, well that goes to show you or show me anyway.

Glad GOTG is still doing well.

May see TMNT down the road but was never a huge fan and I have to say that I'm not diggin their look in this film too much.

Didn't see anything but I figured Turtle Power would win. They have three decades of near constant exposure. As good as it was the Powerpuff Girls wouldn't have done the same from the same era.

But GOTG has so much critical and public love there is no need to worry about the raccoon and tree.

I didn't know that the TMNT cartoons were still out there or that Disney XD was showing the old movies.  That explains why my grandsons are all geeked up about seeing the new TMNT movie.

I tried to get them (the kids) excited about seeing GotG but my daugher nixed that because someone told her that they say the word shit in the movie several times.  If I can't see it with my grandsons, I have to see GotG alone because my lady friend refuses to see movies of that ilk and I'm too old fashioned go with a buddy.

Blank, I feel your pain. My girl is an ex-Mennonite and she does not like going to see movies with cursing or nudity. So, that means pretty much anything. I'm slowly making inroads with my corruption of her morals. But, it's slow going. ...lol

Hey, there is a manly way to go see a movie with a buddy. Just sit at least two seats from another. Or, one of you sit in a row and the other sits in the seat next to you but a row behind or in fron of you. That's how we do it, anyway. ...lol

Man up and go to a movie by yourself.  I saw GotG by myself last weekend and Into the Storm by myself this weekend.  Maybe I'm just sad but I can't get my family to see some of my more frivilous movie choices with me.

Maybe when my neice and nephew are a little older I can take them to movies but  they are still too young.  We did have an expedition to the Museum of Natural History on Friday though.  First the planeterium, then the exhibit on Pterosaurs.

But about Into the Storm, fun flick.  Lots of awesome weather, tornadoes sucking up fire and mowing down buildings and stuff.  It's not going to win any Oscars but I enjoyed it.

Geez Blank , that is not old fashioned, that is anti-social. I go to the movies with my friends all the time. Yeah GUY friends. And I go with my wife, and I go with my kids and I will go alone.

I actually love going alone sometimes. When my wife is working on a weekend I will do a movie day. Pack a back pack with snacks and water. Maybe grab a sub for lunch. Then go hang out at the theater all day and catch up on movies. It is fun.

OR...people can drop the homophobic nonsense and realize that seeing a movie with their friend isn't an intimate, romantic, or sexual experience.  Seriously...never realized this was a thing.

Finally saw Guardians...loved it!

chiefBrody 8/11/2014 1:21:33 AM

Hahaha... what the hell, a male refusing to seat next to another guy because he's afraid that people might think he's not manly enough? That's the most stupid thing I've heard in year. Some people got som serious issues.

ElBaz13 8/11/2014 5:03:30 AM

Ok. so my buddies and I are planning an Expendables 3 outing like we do with all of the movies of that franchise. We are six of us so does this mean we have to sit in six different rows to be manly?
