I didn't even know Pacific Rim came out.  So much for publicity.

Well, I said it in last week's Mania box office report that DM would repeat as first place winner, though I was suprised Sandler's flick did ss good as it did. I'm also not shocked by PR's pefformance, as I do believe I had it finishing third. If I were a betting man, I would say three-peat coming for the Minions, but RIPD just might be a suprise. Both will score around 30m and Red 2 will take third; PR and sandler will drop to 4th and 5th, respectively. To tell the truth, I don't see another hit this summer except possibly Elysium.

It seems peeps  just dont care about giant monsters fighting in the rain.

I think RIPD looks like a crap and it has "my movies dont usually make a lot of money" aka Ryan Reynolds.  I expect it to suck and flop.

LOL! Hanso. You said it before. Box Office poison = Ryan Reynolds. Turbo also looks like shit. Dreamworks has done well in the past few years for animated flicks. Rise of the Guardians was a good movie but sadly didn't do well at the box office. Turbo will do worse.

It's pretty wild to see Despicable Me 2 still up there. That movie can maybe crack 300 million domestic. Also surprised it will beat Monsters U for best animated flick (box office wise)

Yes, RIPD doesn't look that great. Men in Black formula. That's it.

I'm also guilty of not going to see Pacific Rim over the weekend. I'm getting behind on my movies as the weather is way too nice to be inside watching a movie. Camping this weekend, Camping all the end of July. Looks like PR, Lone Ranger and Wolverine will be rentals for me. :(

What's amazing is people's willingness to pay $10 on up to see a crappy Adam Sandler movie.  How many Razzies has this guy been nominated for?  I doubt he cares as he laughs all the way to the bank.

This has nothing to do with PR, but I could care less about another Godzilla movie.  There is nothing new under the sun for this franchise.

Also, I agree with Hanso, RIPD looks dumb and I will be surprised if this does well.

First off I predict that Pacific Rim II, the overseas numbers and DVD/Blu Ray sales will justify it. The reason why Pacific Rim didn't outperform Sandler's lastest POS is because the concept was too out there for most traditional movie goers. A lot of my friends that are not into sci-fi didn't know if the film was supposed to be a horror film, action film, etc.  When I tried to explain it's a mashupof several generes they didn't get it. Which is sad. Because if people just gave the film a chance they would have been pleased.

I guess people would rather watch Adam Sandler getting whizzed on by a moose than a decent Scifi mashup.

And for the record RIPD will bomb leaving a crater the size of Texas in it's wake. The previews alone were so bad that they had to spray Febreze at the end of the trailer.

When it comes down to it when people have to make time for the movies, hustle the kids together/get a babysitter, pay for dinner/concessions, they want to make sure they get the bang for the buck for their time and money and will default to sequels of things they know. Sometimes it works out differently but usually sequels are always at the top of the box office. It's not good or bad, it just is.

I got nothing against Sandler and enjoy his movies but I haven't seen one of his at the theaters in about a decade. DM2 is family animated work where the original was a big hit.

PR not opening big probably comes down to that nebulous thing of timing. You could created the best/critically acclaimed movie of all time but if the mood of the country or the b.o. competition is against you well all you can do is just sit there and hope for overseas and DVD sales.

I was never sold on PR as I had commented going back months but my reasons were mostly that it looked like an anime live action film and I hate anime.

Plus I have to admit the cgi never won me over either. Still I'm sure I'll make time to see it at some point.

And look at this, I'm actually more interested in RIPD that PR. I think it looks like a fun time. Maybe I'll catch both next weekend

As I have stated in the past, the giant monster, giant robot flicks just don't seem to go over with the general movie audience in America.  I'm surprised it didn't crack $50M it's opening weekend, but I did expect the numbers to be fairly low overall, at least in the US.  Overseas looks like it made $53M, which is where I expected the film to do well.

I saw the movie yesterday.  It was fun and enjoyable, but that's about all I can say.  Solid summer, fun flick, but as my friend leaned over and said while watching the movie "One thing this movie is not is unpredictable."  The story was pretty basic with no real surprises save for one, which I won't spoil here.  The CGI was very well done, but it would have been nice to have seen a full on battle in the bright daylight with no rain instead we got almost entirely all night/rainy battles.  I know it helps to hide flaws in the CGI with the dark lighting and the rain, but come on, even ID4 gave us a dog fight between spaceships and jets in the sun.

One last thing, I think it's pretty ridiculous that no one here or anywhere is complaining about the levels of destruction in this movie.  Last month, it was all anyone would talk about with Man of Steel, but apparently no one has problems with it when it's giant robots and giant monsters.  I, for one, had no problem with the destruction in MoS.  I can point to numerous examples of the same levels of destruction in the comics and even in the 90's animated series.  When super-beings do battle in a large city, shit breaks.  End rant.
