Apes Take Second Weekend

It was a weak week for Summer releases. The the three big releases (Sex Tape, Planes: Fire and Rescue, and The Purge: Anarchy) weren’t summer power houses. The Purge: Anarchy is clearly the winner, among the three, as it made three times its budget. It’s great to have a movie to take the kids to, Planes: Fire and Rescue, especially when they get the summer crazies. However, without kids, screaming in your ear, why bother with a non-Pixar animated Disney film?

The winner, by word of mouth and great reviews, this week was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Ray Suber of Box Office Mojo had this to report: “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes eased 50 percent to $36 million. In comparison, the other major Summer sequels—The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Transformers: Age of Extinction—all fell at least 61 percent at the same point. That drop is also roughly on par with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (49 percent).

That strong hold can be attributed to positive reviews and word-of-mouth, and unimpressive competition from this weekend's newcomers. Overall, the Apes sequel has earned $139 million, and could wind up over $230 million by the end of its run”.

So will it be Scarlett Johansson in Lucy this weekend or “The Rock” in Hercules? I have two words for you to help you decide, Brett Ratner. Now your choice is obvious.

Brett Ratner.... AND Luc Besson.... That tells me... to see both!

Apes was so vastly superior as a movie than ASM2, Transformers, and X-men, so to me it wasn't a surprise it did better the second week than those 3.  X-men was a good movie but ASM2 and Transformers just under-whelmed me.

Watched The Purge last night, was a pretty good movie considering I didn't watch the first one, hope this series continues with different stories revolving around The Purge.  Am now a Frank Grillo fan after this movie and his role in Captain America.

Apes was terrific.  It may win for a third week in a row because of the strong word of mouth and the perceived lack of excitement for Hercules and the post-modern feminist version of Hercules.

Brett Ratner vs. Luc Besson - there is no competition.

 Apes.  Together.  Strong.

Lucy is tracking pretty big so I would expect it to win this next weekend.  Then Guardians of the Galaxy takes over the following week.

AMS2 for me felt like it lost touch with reality. In the sense that Foxx's character wasn't funny or real, he seemed like a fake. That hurt the movie for me. The rest was okay.

TRANS4 was fun, it was long and they blew up lots of stuff. It was a Summer movie and it seemed to work pretty good.

APES, I am looking forward to seeing this one...
