Mania Box Office Report: The Power of Gravity

3rd week in a row!

It’s strange if you look at the box office report from another perspective. This is it for Gravity. There won’t be a sequel or a prequel. A good thing, I assure you, but outside of a DVD and Blu-ray take, this is all the money the film will make (probably a few more weeks on the chart as well). Looking at the top ten alone, Carrie is a remake, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Insidious Chapter 2 are both obvious sequels. Escape Plan could spawn a sequel. Thankfully, this will be all for Gravity as it is incredible. Perhaps Hollywood should pay attention and start turning out more original features without sequels built in.

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to stay about the weight of Gravity: “In its third outing, Gravity eased 28 percent to an estimated $31 million. While that isn't quite as good as last weekend's 23 percent drop, it's still a phenomenal hold for a movie that's receiving some of the strongest word-of-mouth in years. Through 17 days in theaters, Gravity has earned $170.6 million, which ranks tenth in 2013. It's now on pace for at least $270 million by the end of its run”.

Gravity like a BOSS!

I'm glad to see Gravity, getting such good numbers. Great movie, we need more of these. I'm surprised by the the weekend Carrie, had. Carrie, looks good and the word of mouth had been decent. I'm looking forward to THOR!

I love to hear stories about movies like Gravity that strong word of mouth keep it going.

Glad to see Cuaron getting success. I think his Harry Potter was the best of the bunch.

Wiseguy 10/21/2013 11:20:23 AM

I liked Gravity a lot, glad to see it's doing so well. Just not tripping over myself over it. It's a very good and taut thriller. I just find it funny how some are talking about some spiritual trip or something. OK ok I know to each their own.

It's to space films what Taken was to action films. Simple, straight to the point films with no filler.

And btw I've seen it 2 times so there ain't no hate here, just proper perspective.

One last thing, even in 2D the film holds up so anyone that can't deal with 3D glasses don't shy away from 2D screens

Wiseguy 10/21/2013 11:22:18 AM

Oh and Carrie was okay. But like someone else said they didn't really add anything from the original. Seemed like a wasted opportunity. Still a decent flick

Nothing can stop the force of Gravity.

Wonder how many times that has been used in news reports.

Sad to see the Fifth Estate have such a low start...you'd think a movie about someone trying to show the truth would be popular...

Wiseguy 10/21/2013 1:20:55 PM

We can't handle the truth

millean 10/21/2013 1:47:27 PM

Then does that mean that we aren't set free, then?

Gravity was pretty good, but I agree with Wiseguy's take.  Nothing transcendent there.

"Nothing can stop the force of Gravity!"

"Gravity has visuals that are out of this world!"

"Sandra Bullock really conveys the Gravity of her character's situation, and really brings it down to Earth..."

Come on, how many more puns can we come up with?  :)

I see that "Machete Kills", after the 8th worst opening in movie history, dropped out of sight and "Gravity" is off the charts.
